Flip Flops Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What Is Being Made
This downloadable crochet pattern creates a pair of decorative flip flops suitable for display, doll accessories, or small craft projects. The design features a structured sole with embellished flower details, offering a fun and functional crochet project that combines basic shaping with decorative elements.
Techniques Used
The Flip Flops pattern employs fundamental crochet construction techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The sole is built using incremental increases to create a shaped foundation, while the overall design incorporates color work through the use of multiple yarn colors. Assembly techniques include sewing pieces together with thread and a sewing needle, as well as weaving in ends with a darning needle for a finished appearance. The pattern also includes optional embellishment with beads for added detail on the flower elements.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create the foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Single crochet (sc) – The primary stitch for building the sole and main structure
- Double crochet (dc) – Employed for additional texture and drape in the design
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used for joining and finishing edges
Materials and Tools
This pattern is designed to work with DK weight yarn (also known as 8 ply wool, light worsted in US terminology, or double knit in UK terminology). The designer used three colors of cotton or wool to create visual interest and definition in the flip flops. A 2.5mm crochet hook is recommended for the primary yarn weight. Additional materials include scissors for cutting yarn, thread for assembly, a sewing needle for joining pieces, and a darning needle for weaving in loose ends. Optional embellishment includes a bead for decorating the center of the flower detail.
Size Options
The pattern provides three size variations to accommodate different yarn weights and project scales:
- Large – 7cm x 3.5cm (2.75" x 1.5") when made with 8 ply wool
- Medium – 5cm x 2.5cm (1.75" x 1") when made with 4 ply crochet cotton
- Small – 3cm x 1.5cm (1.25" x 0.75") when made with No. 20 crochet cotton
Pattern Structure
The sole construction begins with a small foundation chain and builds outward through strategic increases. The initial rows establish the basic shape, with increases worked at the beginning and end of rows to create the characteristic flip flop sole silhouette. Video tutorial support is available through the designer's YouTube channel, providing visual guidance for crafters who prefer multimedia instruction alongside written pattern directions.
