FLASK Shawl by Miss Tejidos Designs

Project Overview

FLASK is an intermediate-level knitted shawl design by Miss Tejidos Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a large, elegant triangular or crescent-shaped shawl with finished dimensions of 130 to 135 centimeters in both height and width, making it a substantial wrap suitable for layering or draping.

Construction Method and Techniques

The shawl is constructed using a top-down knitting method, beginning with a small cast-on of just 4 stitches that gradually increases to accommodate the expanding stitch count. This growth pattern is achieved through strategic yarn-over increases distributed throughout the pattern, allowing the shawl to expand organically from a central point into its final large dimensions.

The pattern employs circular needles to manage the increasing number of stitches comfortably as the shawl grows. The design incorporates a two-needle technique, using 4 mm needles for the border sections and slightly larger 4.5 mm needles for the body of the shawl. This needle-size variation creates subtle textural differences between the edge and main fabric.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used

The FLASK pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques:

  • Knit (k) - the basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric structure
  • Purl (p) - reverse knit stitches used for textural variation and border definition
  • Yarn Over (yo) - creates new stitches and decorative eyelet holes that increase stitch count while adding visual interest
  • Knit Front and Back (kfb) - an increase technique that creates two stitches from one
  • Purl Through Back Loop (ptbl) - a twisted purl variation that adds subtle texture
  • Knit 3 Pass Slip Over (k3pso) - a decrease technique involving knitting three stitches and passing the first over the other two
  • Yarn Front (yfn) - positions yarn forward to create new stitches

Yarn and Materials

The pattern is designed specifically for sock yarn weight (4-ply), which is traditionally a finer yarn category. The designer recommends using needles 2 to 3 sizes larger than standard for this yarn weight, creating a more open, drapey fabric than typical sock yarn projects would produce.

The recommended yarn is Lana Grossa Meilenwelt Fun, requiring 6 skeins with 200 meters per skein, totaling 1,200 meters of yarn. This yardage calculation is based on the specified needle and gauge combination. The pattern notes that gauge is not crucial for this project, though adjusting needle size or yarn weight will affect total yardage requirements if you wish to modify the final dimensions.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern establishes a gauge of 20 stitches by 24 rows over 10 centimeters when worked in stockinette stitch with 4 mm needles. Since gauge flexibility is built into this design, crafters can experiment with different yarn weights or needle sizes to achieve larger or smaller finished dimensions while maintaining the shawl's proportions.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, the FLASK pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with basic stitches and increases, but may be working with shawl construction methods or stitch abbreviations for the first time. The straightforward setup rows and logical increase placement make it accessible to knitters ready to advance beyond beginner projects.
