Product Description
This shawl was inspired by my memories of my scuba diving days and my fascination with watching the silvery bubbles of air rushing to the surface through glorious blue waters. It’s an asymmetric triangle knitted sideways from a few cast on stitches. It is mostly knitted in stocking stitch with rows of slipped stitches to create the pattern and it’s finished with a contrasting i-cord bind off.

What Is Being Made
The Fizz Pop Shawl is an asymmetric triangle shawl designed by Helen Kennedy. This knitted accessory draws inspiration from the designer's scuba diving experiences, specifically the visual memory of silvery air bubbles ascending through blue ocean waters. The shawl is constructed sideways from a small number of cast-on stitches, creating a dynamic triangular silhouette that works beautifully as a versatile layering piece or statement accessory.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Fizz Pop Shawl employs several fundamental knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance. The primary construction method is sideways knitting, which allows the shawl to grow from a narrow edge into its full triangular shape. This approach provides flexibility in adjusting the final dimensions during the knitting process. The design features strategic use of slipped stitches arranged in rows to create visual patterning that mimics the bubble motif central to the design concept. The shawl concludes with a contrasting i-cord bind-off, which adds a refined finished edge and introduces a secondary color accent.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Fizz Pop Shawl is predominantly worked in stocking stitch, the fundamental knit fabric that forms the smooth, even base of the garment. Within this stocking stitch foundation, rows of slipped stitches create the bubble pattern that gives the shawl its distinctive character and visual interest. The slipped stitches are strategically placed to form lines and texture that evoke the rising bubbles that inspired the design. The i-cord bind-off used to finish the edges provides both a decorative and structural element, creating a neat, professional edge treatment in a contrasting yarn color.
Yarn and Materials
The Fizz Pop Shawl requires two coordinating yarns in sock weight for optimal results. The main color (MC) calls for approximately 150 grams of sock weight yarn, equivalent to roughly 520 meters or 567 yards. The pattern is shown worked in BlackElephantUK sock weight yarn in the colorway Ocean Warrior. The contrasting color (CC) requires approximately 60 grams of sock weight yarn, providing about 221 meters or 242 yards. The contrast yarn shown is Chester wool Superwash Merino Single Ply in Natural. Color selection is critical for this design: the pattern instructions emphasize choosing two yarns with strong contrast, such as light versus dark or distinctly different hues. The designer specifically advises against selecting two complementary yarns that share colors in common, as this would diminish the visibility and impact of the bubble pattern.
Difficulty Level
The Fizz Pop Shawl is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with some foundational experience. While the basic stitches employed are relatively straightforward, the sideways construction method and the need to manage pattern placement with slipped stitches require attention and understanding of how shawls are shaped and constructed. Intermediate knitters will find this project a rewarding opportunity to develop their skills in shawl construction and colorwork integration.
Yarn Weight Specifications
This pattern is designed for use with 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights. The pattern specifications provided reference sock weight yarn, which typically falls within this yardage range and weight category, offering excellent stitch definition for the slipped stitch patterning that creates the bubble motif.
