Firenze Pullover by Irina Anikeeva
What is Being Made
The Firenze Pullover is a women's knitted sweater designed by independent designer Irina Anikeeva. This pullover is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3XL, with finished bust circumferences from 35¼ inches (89.5 cm) to 56¾ inches (144 cm). The garment features positive ease of 2–6 inches (5–15 cm), making it suitable for a comfortable, relaxed fit. The pullover is shown in size M with a finished bust circumference of 40½ inches (103 cm).
Construction Method
The Firenze Pullover is constructed using a top-down approach, worked in the round as a single piece. This method begins at the neckline and progresses downward, incorporating round yoke shaping to create a fitted shoulder and upper body before the body widens toward the hem. Working in the round eliminates the need for seaming and allows for seamless construction throughout the garment.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project uses Stockinette stitch as the primary stitch pattern. Stockinette stitch, worked in the round, creates the smooth, classic knit fabric characteristic of this pullover. The pattern includes cable needles among its notions, suggesting decorative cable elements are incorporated into the design, though specific cable placements and stitch counts are referenced in the pattern's stitch guide and chart repeats.
Knitters working on this project are advised to consider placing stitch markers between chart repeats to help track pattern sections and maintain consistency throughout the yoke shaping and body.
Yarn and Materials
The Firenze Pullover is designed to be worked in sport weight yarn. The yardage requirements vary by size: XS requires approximately 950 yards (869 meters), while the largest size (3XL) requires approximately 1,650 yards (1,509 meters). The pattern specifies Miss Babs Yummy 3-Ply Sport, a 100% Superwash Merino yarn, which provides durability and easy care for this everyday pullover.
Additional materials required include stitch markers, waste yarn for provisional cast-on or stitch holding, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming if necessary, and two cable needles for working cable stitches.
Gauge and Needle Size
The pattern calls for US 4/3.5 mm needles to achieve the correct gauge. The target gauge is 23 stitches and 34 rounds per 4 inches (10 cm) when working Stockinette stitch in the round, measured after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements and proper fit of the garment.
