Finn Hat – Baby and Toddler Knitting Pattern by Helena Rosen for MillaMia

The Finn Hat is a charming, beginner-friendly knitted hat designed by Helena Rosen for MillaMia. Worked in bold, cheerful stripes using MillaMia Naturally Soft Cotton yarn, this pattern produces a snug, colourful hat sized for babies and toddlers. It is an ideal project for knitters who are new to colourwork and want to practise managing multiple yarn colours in a clean, structured stripe sequence.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a striped knitted hat sized to fit children aged 6–12 months, 24–36 months, and 48–60 months. The hat has a neat, rounded shape without a ribbed brim, which gives it a clean, modern silhouette. Because there is no ribbing, the pattern notes emphasise choosing the correct size carefully to ensure a proper fit.

Two distinct colourway versions are offered within the same pattern:

  • 2 Colour Version: Uses a Dark (D) and a Light (L) shade, with the suggested combination of French Navy (320) as the dark colour and Candy Pink (340) as the light colour.
  • 3 Colour Version: Introduces a Mid (M) tone alongside a Dark and a Light, with the suggested combination of Indigo Purple (321) as dark, Tomato (332) as mid, and Lemon Yellow (333) as light.

Techniques Used

  • Seamless construction: The hat is worked in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and producing a smooth, professional finish suitable for a beginner.
  • Stripe sequences: Both the 2 colour and 3 colour versions follow a precise, written stripe sequence that rotates through the chosen shades in a defined repeat. This teaches knitters how to carry and switch yarns at regular intervals.
  • Worked flat (where applicable): The pattern also incorporates flat knitting elements, giving knitters exposure to both working in the round and working back and forth in rows.
  • Crown decreases: Shaping at the top of the hat is achieved through decrease stitches, including the specialised S2kpo decrease — slip the next 2 stitches as if to k2tog, knit 1, then pass the slipped stitches over — which creates a neat, centred double decrease ideal for hat crown shaping.
  • k2tog (knit two together): A standard right-leaning decrease also used during crown shaping.
  • m1 (make one): An increase worked by picking up the loop lying before the next stitch, used to add stitches where the pattern requires.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (Stockinette stitch in US terminology): The main body of the hat is worked in stocking stitch, creating a smooth knit fabric that showcases the stripe colourwork clearly.
  • Garter stitch: Referenced within the abbreviations, garter stitch may appear as a textural accent within the pattern.
  • S2kpo: A centred double decrease specific to this pattern, used to shape the hat crown symmetrically.

Materials

The pattern calls for MillaMia Naturally Soft Cotton yarn, a sport weight yarn available in 50g/1¾oz balls. For the 2 colour version, one ball each of the two chosen shades is required. For the 3 colour version, one ball each of the three chosen shades is needed. The recommended needle size is a set of 3.25mm (US 3) knitting needles.

The tension (gauge) for this pattern is 25 stitches and 34 rows to 10cm/4in worked over stocking stitch on 3.25mm needles. Achieving the correct tension is especially important here, as the hat has no ribbed brim to compensate for sizing differences.
