Finery Cardigan by Tori Gurbisz
What is Being Made
The Finery cardigan is a top-down raglan-style sweater designed by Tori Gurbisz and presented by Lachesis and Co. This knitted garment features a close-fitting silhouette through the body that transitions to a subtle A-line shape at the hips, making it versatile for both everyday wear and special occasions. The cardigan is available in five sizes, ranging from 30 inches to 38 inches in full bust measurement (76 cm to 96.5 cm).
Construction and Techniques
The Finery cardigan employs a top-down raglan construction, a popular method in modern knitting that allows knitters to work from the neckline downward, making it easy to try on and adjust length as needed. This technique provides excellent fit control and eliminates the need for seaming multiple pieces together. The sweater features undulating lace edging along the sweater body and cuffs, adding visual interest and an elegant finish to the garment. The primary fabric is worked in a straightforward knit pattern, keeping the construction accessible for intermediate-level knitters while the decorative lace details elevate the finished piece.
Stitches Used
The main body of the Finery cardigan is worked in Stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit stitch that creates a smooth, classic fabric. The distinctive design element is the lace stitch used for the undulating edges on both the sweater perimeter and the cuffs, providing textural contrast and a refined aesthetic.
Materials and Gauge
The Finery cardigan is designed to be worked with Malabrigo Rastita, a 100% Merino Wool yarn available in 100-gram skeins with 310 yards per skein. The pattern shown features the Natural colorway and requires 3 to 4 skeins depending on size selection. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch using US 6/4mm needles, or whatever needle size is necessary to achieve proper gauge. The pattern emphasizes the importance of washing and blocking your gauge swatch to ensure accurate finished measurements.
Needles and Notions
- US 6/4mm circular needles in multiple lengths: one 24-32 inch needle for the main body, plus two additional 32-40 inch circular needles or one 60-inch circular needle for working the edging and hem in one piece
- Double-pointed needles (DPNs) for attaching buckle closures
- Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping increases
- Two locking markers or safety pins for holding stitches
- 2-3 buckle closures for the cardigan front
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends and attaching notions
Difficulty Level
The Finery cardigan is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the top-down raglan construction and Stockinette stitch base are accessible to knitters with foundational skills, the lace edging details and the coordination of multiple circular needles require intermediate-level experience and comfort with lace knitting techniques.
