Product Description

This is the second sock featured in the Claire Ellen Sock Club. The Fraternal Pairs Fili (teal) & Kili (lime) are actually 2 complementary patterns, both written for right & left foot. As the SKA challenge in October is Fraternal pairs, you can "choose your own adventure" with these.

The Fili sock features twisted knits and purls as well as cables without rest rows. For those reasons, I'm listing it as an intermediate sock. Not terribly complex, but not a walk in the park either. It'd be helpful if you've knit both cables and socks before.

The yarns used in the pictures are both Pediboo, which is a little thicker than the average sock yarn. No matter this sock can be knit with a finer yarn just as easily. Pick a yarn and needle combo that give you a fabric you like & the gauge listed. I used one skein per sock, so if you're working with a single skein, I'd recommend finding one between 380-400 yards.

Fili Socks by Claire Ellen

What is Being Made

Fili Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of advanced socks designed by Claire Ellen. The pattern is part of a matching pair concept that pairs with the Kili sock design. While Fili and Kili are designed as companion patterns that create a matching but not identical pair when made together, each pattern functions as a complete, standalone sock design. The pattern includes mirror-image charts and detailed directions for both socks, allowing knitters to choose which version they prefer to create.

Techniques Used

This sock pattern employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that contribute to its complexity and visual interest. The primary technique featured throughout Fili is twisted-stitch cabling, which creates decorative raised lines and textured patterns on the sock fabric. The pattern utilizes sock construction methods including top-down or bottom-up knitting on needles, with detailed shaping for the heel and toe. The inclusion of mirror-image charts allows knitters to create matching pairs with intentional design variations. Additionally, the pattern provides adaptability for different needle techniques, demonstrating versatility in construction approaches.

Stitches Used

Fili Socks features twisted-stitch cables as the primary decorative stitch element. These cables create dimensional texture through the manipulation of stitches in a twisted formation rather than traditional cable twists. The pattern also incorporates standard sock stitches including knit and purl stitches for the base fabric and ribbing. The cable work requires knitters to either use a cable needle or employ the advanced technique of cabling without a needle, both of which are supported by the pattern instructions.

Materials and Tools

The Fili Socks pattern requires approximately 320-400 yards (350-365 meters) of sock yarn for completion. The pictured sample was knit in the small size using approximately 160 yards (145 meters) each of Pediboo yarn in colorway 1130. Knitters will need US Size 1 (2.25mm) sock needles, or the appropriate needle size to achieve the required gauge. The pattern is written for double-pointed needles (DPNs) but can be easily adapted to the Magic Loop method with the use of stitch markers. Additional tools necessary for completion include a tape measure, tapestry needle for finishing, and either a cable needle or the ability to cable without a needle, with the latter being highly recommended for experienced knitters.

Skill Level and Pattern Complexity

While the pattern is categorized as advanced, the skill level assessment provided indicates Intermediate difficulty due to the cable work, complex directions, and sock construction requirements. This pattern is best suited for knitters who have prior experience with sock construction and cable techniques, as the combination of these elements requires attention to detail and familiarity with reading charts and managing multiple stitches simultaneously.
