The Festive Bolero is a knitted shrug-style garment designed to be worn over dresses or other clothing. This intermediate-level project creates a fitted, short jacket featuring raglan armhole shaping that provides elegant coverage for the shoulders and upper back. The bolero is available in three sizes: Small/Medium, Medium/Large, and Large, accommodating various body measurements and fit preferences.

Construction and Design Techniques

This bolero is constructed using traditional knitting methods with strategic shaping to create a flattering silhouette. The garment is worked in pieces—a back panel and two sleeves—which are then assembled. The design incorporates raglan armhole shaping on both the back and sleeves, a classic tailoring technique that creates diagonal lines from the underarm to the neckline. This shaping is achieved through strategic decreases worked at regular intervals, creating the characteristic sloped shoulder line of a raglan-style garment.

The back piece begins with a cast-on of 92 to 114 stitches depending on size, worked initially in stockinette stitch before raglan decreases are introduced. The sleeves are constructed separately, beginning with a smaller stitch count and incorporating increases worked every sixth row to gradually widen the sleeve before the cap shaping begins. This increase method creates a smooth, tapered transition from the narrow upper arm to the fuller sleeve body.
