Fern Flower Socks by Renate Dziedataja
Design Overview
Fern Flower Socks are an intermediate-level knitting pattern from the Summer Sock Collection 2020, designed by Renate Dziedataja. This collection draws inspiration from Latvian Midsummer traditions, specifically the mystical legend of the fern flower. According to tradition, fern flowers bloom on the night of June 23rd, and Latvian couples venture into the woods seeking this rare bloom, believing that finding it will bring luck and happiness. The design captures this enchanting folklore through its knitted construction, making it a culturally meaningful wearable.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a pair of adult socks available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. The finished socks feature adjustable foot length and are designed to fit various foot circumferences. The sizing options ensure a customized fit for different wearers, with foot circumference ranging from 7.5 inches (19 cm) in size Small to 9 inches (23 cm) in size Large, and foot length adjustable from 9 inches (23 cm) to 11.25 inches (28.5 cm).
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate knitting project employs traditional sock construction methods using circular needles. The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary stitch structure, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for sock wear. The design incorporates two-color knitting, a technique that allows the fern flower motif to emerge through the interplay of a main color and a contrasting color yarn. This colorwork method requires managing two yarn colors simultaneously while knitting, adding complexity suitable for intermediate-level knitters who have experience with basic stitch techniques and are ready to explore patterned designs.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch – The foundational stitch creating the smooth fabric base throughout the sock
- Two-Color Knitting – Colorwork technique used to create the fern flower pattern detail
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Fern Flower Socks pattern calls for fingering weight yarn in two colors. Fingering weight yarn, also known as sock yarn, is a fine yarn weight ideal for creating fitted, durable socks with excellent stitch definition. The total yardage required is approximately 400 meters per 100 grams of yarn.
Yardage by Size:
- Size Small: Main Color (MC) approximately 157 yards (144 m, 36 g); Contrasting Color (CC) approximately 42 yards (38 m, 10 g)
- Size Medium: Main Color (MC) approximately 182 yards (166 m, 42 g); Contrasting Color (CC) approximately 48 yards (44 m, 11 g)
- Size Large: Main Color (MC) approximately 232 yards (212 m, 53 g); Contrasting Color (CC) approximately 57 yards (52 m, 13 g)
Yardage may vary depending on individual gauge and yarn characteristics. The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches and 42 rounds to 4 inches (10 cm) when working stockinette stitch on US #1 (2.25 mm) needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sock fit and is particularly important when working with fingering weight yarn on small-diameter needles.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle two-color colorwork. The combination of circular needle sock construction and the precision required for two-color knitting makes this an engaging project for developing knitters seeking to expand their technical skills.
