Ferelith Cardigan – P161 by OGE Knitwear Designs

What is Being Made

The Ferelith Cardigan is a knitted baby cardigan designed by OGE Knitwear Designs, available in seven sizes ranging from newborn through 4 years old. This is a buttoned cardigan suitable for infants and young children, with finished chest measurements starting at 46 cm (18 inches) for the smallest size and expanding to accommodate growing toddlers up to 34 cm (13½ inches) chest depth at the largest size.

Sizes and Finished Measurements

The Ferelith Cardigan pattern includes the following size options:

  • Size A: Birth to 3 months – 46 cm (18 in) chest, 15 cm (6 in) sleeve length
  • Size B: 6 months – 17 cm (7 in) sleeve length
  • Size C: 12 months – 19 cm (7½ in) sleeve length
  • Size D: 18 months – 20 cm (8 in) sleeve length, 30 cm (12 in) chest depth
  • Size E: 2 years – 23 cm (9 in) sleeve length, 32 cm (12½ in) chest depth, 225 grams yarn required
  • Size F: 3 years – 24 cm (9½ in) sleeve length, 33 cm (13 in) chest depth, 240 grams yarn required
  • Size G: 4 years – 27 cm (11 in) sleeve length, 34 cm (13½ inches) chest depth, 265 grams yarn required

Yarn and Materials

The Ferelith Cardigan is worked in DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight suitable for creating garments with good drape and definition. Yarn requirements vary by size:

  • Size E (2 years): 225 grams, 470 meters (520 yards)
  • Size F (3 years): 240 grams, 505 meters (555 yards)
  • Size G (4 years): 265 grams, 555 meters (610 yards)

In addition to yarn, the pattern requires 3 buttons for the front cardigan closure and a needle set as specified below.

Needles and Tools

The Ferelith Cardigan pattern calls for 4 mm (US 6 : UK 8) needles in multiple configurations to accommodate different sections of the garment:

  • One pair of 4 mm straight needles or circulars, approximately 80 cm (32 inches) long, for working the main body pieces
  • One set of 4 mm double-pointed needles for working the sleeves in the round

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Ferelith Cardigan is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by OGE Knitwear Designs. The pattern demonstrates classic baby cardigan construction methods, combining flat knitting on straight or circular needles for the body with seamless in-the-round knitting using double-pointed needles for the sleeves. This hybrid approach is a standard technique in contemporary knitwear design, allowing knitters to minimize seaming while maintaining control over shaping and fit in the body sections.

The cardigan features a buttoned front closure, requiring knitters to work buttonholes or button bands as part of the garment construction. The graduated sizing system—with seven distinct options—demonstrates the pattern's attention to proper fit across different developmental stages, from newborn through early childhood.

Skill Level

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Ferelith Cardigan assumes familiarity with fundamental knitting techniques including casting on, basic stitches, increasing and decreasing for shaping, and finishing techniques such as binding off and seaming. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions and managing multiple needle sizes and construction methods.
