Product Description

I love to look at the architecture of houses and buildings. The term, false front, describes a building with a facade that is bigger and more imposing than the inside. These socks have a similar trick up their sleeve...in their cuff. The front is smooth, simple stockinette while the back is an elaborate cabled panel.

Details: This sock is knit in the round from cuff to toe. The cable pattern is only worked on the back of the leg while the front of the leg and the entirety of the foot are knit in stockinette. The short row heel is worked without a heel flap using a unique but simple series of increases and decreases.

Sizes: Womens (Womens Wide) 8 (9)“ circumference

Yarn: Cascade Heritage Silk in color: Pink.

Needle: Size 1/2.25mm DPNs or 1 long circular.

False Front Socks by Fatimah Hinds

What is Being Made

The False Front Socks are a pair of women's socks designed by Fatimah Hinds, available in standard women's sizing and women's wide sizing. These socks feature a finished circumference of 8 inches for standard sizing and 9 inches for wide sizing. The design showcases a striking visual contrast between a decorative cable-patterned back leg and a clean stockinette front, creating an elegant asymmetrical aesthetic ideal for showcasing the foot in open-toed footwear or rolled-down styling.

Knitting Techniques

The False Front Socks are knit in the round from cuff to toe using either four double-pointed needles or a long circular needle with the magic loop method. This construction method creates a seamless garment with no seams to weave in. The pattern demonstrates advanced-level knitting techniques, including cable work and strategic stitch count management across different sections of the sock.

A key feature of this design is the unique heel construction, which is worked without a traditional heel flap. Instead, the heel is created using a simple but distinctive series of increases and decreases, offering an alternative approach to standard heel shaping. The pattern requires careful attention to stitch counts, as the front and instep sections maintain different stitch counts than the back and sole sections at several points throughout the pattern.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch – used for the front of the leg and the entirety of the foot
  • Cable pattern – worked exclusively on the back of the leg using the Three Cable Chart
  • Ribbing – knit 2, purl 2 (k2, p2) ribbing used in the cuff section

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Cascade Yarns Heritage Silk, a luxury blend of 85% Merino wool and 15% silk, providing both warmth and sheen. The yarn is fingering weight (4-ply) with 437 yards per 3.5 ounces, ideal for creating refined, fitted socks with excellent stitch definition.

Needles: US 1 (2.25mm) needles, sized appropriately for the 4-ply yarn weight. The pattern accommodates both four double-pointed needles and long circular needles using the magic loop method, allowing knitters to choose their preferred technique.

Additional Notions: Four stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, a cable needle for manipulating stitches in the cable pattern, and a row counter for tracking progress through the pattern.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 35 stitches and 44 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Accurate gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished circumference measurements of 8 inches (standard) or 9 inches (wide). The cuff begins with 72 stitches for standard sizing or 80 stitches for wide sizing, with the Three Cable Chart worked over 38 or 42 stitches respectively on the back leg.
