Lacy leaves float down the length of this vest, against a twisted rib tree bark background, and gather in a gently flaring lower edge. Knitted in I-cord edging gives a nice finish, and the kimono style shaping is flattering to all body types. Side panels connect the front and back.

Eight page pattern includes written instructions, and 5 charts for the lace and leaf placement.

Samples were knit in Cascade, 100% wool, 220yds, 100g, and used (4, 5, 5, 6) skeins.

The black squares on the graph are just placeholders to help the graph line up. They do not represent a stitch - please skip right over them when reading the graph.

Falling Leaves Vest by Cheryl Andrews

What Is Being Made

The Falling Leaves Vest is a women's sleeveless waistcoat featuring a distinctive lacy leaf motif design. This kimono-style vest is available in four sizes: Small (8-10), Medium (12-14), Large (16-18), and Extra Large (20-22), with finished bust measurements ranging from 32-24" to 46-48" and back lengths from 26" to 29" depending on size. The design flatters all body types through its thoughtful shaping and gently flaring lower edge, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions.

Design Features and Construction

This intermediate-level knitting project showcases a beautiful contrast between delicate and structured elements. Lacy leaves float down the length of the vest against a twisted rib tree bark background pattern, creating visual interest and depth. The lower edge gently flares outward, adding movement and dimension to the silhouette. The front closure accommodates 1, 2, or 3 clasps for secure fastening. Side panels connect the front and back pieces, contributing to the kimono-style shaping that defines this garment's flattering fit.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Falling Leaves Vest employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its sophisticated appearance:

  • Lace Knitting: The floating leaf motifs are created using lace techniques, which involve strategic yarn overs and decreases to form openwork patterns
  • Twisted Rib Bark Pattern: The background features a twisted rib pattern that mimics tree bark texture, providing structural contrast to the delicate lace leaves
  • I-Cord Edging: Knitted I-cord finishing is applied to the edges, providing a polished, professional-quality border that frames the vest beautifully
  • Stockinette Stitch: Used in sections of the garment for smooth, classic fabric
  • Kimono-Style Shaping: The construction technique uses side panels to create the flattering kimono silhouette

Yarn and Materials

The Falling Leaves Vest is designed to be knitted with worsted weight yarn, requiring approximately 850 to 1130 yards (380 to 520 grams) depending on size. The pattern samples were knitted in Cascade 100% wool, which provides 220 yards per 100-gram skein, requiring 4 to 6 skeins depending on the chosen size. Cascade yarn or similar worsted weight options such as Nashua are suitable alternatives.

Needles and Gauge

This project requires Size 7 circular needles measuring 24 inches or longer for working the main body pieces, along with Size 7 double-pointed needles for smaller circumference sections and I-cord edging. Achieving proper gauge is essential for fit: the pattern specifies 19 stitches by 24 rows equals 4 inches in stockinette stitch, and 28 stitches by 24 rows equals 4 inches in the relaxed (not stretched) twisted rib Bark Pattern. Knitters should note that the ribbed pattern stretches when worn, so gauge should be measured in the relaxed state rather than stretched to ensure accurate finished measurements.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Falling Leaves Vest is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace work and more complex stitch patterns. The combination of lace knitting, twisted rib techniques, and garment construction with multiple pieces makes this an engaging project for advancing knitters seeking to expand their technical repertoire.
