Product Description
This magical, fairy themed design was inspired by a pretty skein of yarn. In my mind, the colour of the yarn made me think of fluttery fairy wings.
I knew that a lace pattern would help enhance the magic like qualities of the yarn, so I used a traditional Shetland motif. Worked in panels down the length of the sock it brings to mind the tiny wings of these magical creatures.
The gentle rhythm of the stitch pattern make this design the perfect comfort knit, and it would look wonderful in a tonal or speckled yarn.
I added a fun contrast heel, with a comfy square turn. The design is completed with my Umbrella Toe, which has become a firm favourite with sock knitters.
The pattern is both written and charted and is designed for magic loop, although it can easily be worked with double pointed needles.
I used my own hand dyed yarn in the colourway 'Fairy Wings', along with a small amount of Fine Fish Yarns in the colourway 'Fairycakes' for the heels.
Fairy Wings Socks by Kay Jones
What is Being Made
Fairy Wings is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of magical, fairy-themed socks designed by independent designer Kay Jones. This intermediate-level sock design draws inspiration from the delicate appearance of fairy wings, translating that whimsical concept into a wearable knitted accessory. The socks are crafted using 4-ply yarn weight, making them suitable for everyday wear with a comfortable fit.
Design Inspiration and Construction
The Fairy Wings pattern was inspired by a beautiful skein of yarn whose colour evoked the image of fluttering fairy wings. To enhance the magical qualities of the design, Kay Jones incorporated a traditional Shetland lace motif worked in panels down the length of the sock. This panel construction creates a visual effect reminiscent of delicate fairy wings, bringing the whimsical theme to life through the knitted fabric itself.
Stitch Techniques and Pattern Details
The design features a traditional Shetland lace pattern as its primary stitch element. This lace work is worked in vertical panels running down the length of the sock, creating the wing-like appearance central to the design. The pattern includes a contrast heel featuring a square turn construction, adding both visual interest and structural integrity to this high-wear area of the sock. The pattern is completed with the designer's signature Umbrella Toe technique, a custom finish that has become a favourite among sock knitters for its comfort and aesthetic appeal.
Yarn and Materials
Fairy Wings requires one skein of fingering weight yarn, approximately 400 metres (437 yards). The designer recommends choosing either a tonal yarn or a delicately speckled yarn to showcase the lace pattern beautifully. A small amount of contrast yarn is also needed for the decorative heel detail, allowing knitters to add a pop of colour that complements their main yarn choice.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic sock construction and are ready to tackle lace work. The combination of lace panels, contrast heels, and specialty toe techniques requires confidence with standard knitting abbreviations and stitch manipulation, though the gentle rhythm of the stitch pattern makes it an enjoyable and meditative knit.
