Fairisle 4u Hat by Jenny Faifel
What Is Being Made
The Fairisle 4u is a knitted hat designed by Jenny Faifel for average adult head size. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished hat with a circumference of 20 inches and a height of 8 inches, making it a classic fitted hat suitable for everyday wear.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create its finished structure. The hat begins with a long tail cast on method, establishing 120 stitches that are joined to work in the round. The pattern uses circular needles for the initial ribbed sections and transitions to double-pointed needles (DPNs) for the crown shaping as the stitch count decreases. The construction method ensures seamless circular knitting throughout, requiring careful attention to avoid twisting the work at the join.
The defining feature of this hat is its colorwork technique, specifically Fairisle patterning. The colorwork is worked from a chart that repeats twenty times across the main body of the hat, creating a traditional stranded colorwork design where two colors are carried across the rows. This technique requires managing multiple yarn colors and maintaining consistent tension to achieve proper stitch definition and pattern clarity.
Stitches Used
The Fairisle 4u pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches executed in specific ways:
- Knit through back loop (k1tbl) – Used in the ribbed brim sections to create a twisted knit stitch that adds texture and definition
- Purl (p1) – Combined with the twisted knit stitch to form the ribbed brim
- Stockinette stitch – The primary stitch structure for the main body, created by knitting all rounds, which provides a smooth, flat canvas for the colorwork pattern
- Stranded colorwork – Two colors are worked together in the main body section, following the provided chart pattern
Hat Brim Construction
The hat begins with a ribbed brim worked in two colors. The first two rounds are worked in Color A using the twisted knit and purl combination (k1tbl, p1), establishing the initial texture. Rounds 3 through 8 continue the same stitch pattern but switch to Color B, creating a two-color striped ribbed section that adds visual interest and helps the hat stay secure on the head.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern requires sport weight yarn, approximately 200 yards total. The sample shown uses two different 100% wool yarns:
- Color A: Sincere Sheep Equity Sport in Cumulus – 100% wool, 200 yards (183 meters) per skein, approximately 80 yards used
- Color B: Spincycle Dyed in the Wool in Nostalgia – 100% wool, 200 yards (183 meters) per skein, approximately 80 yards used
The gauge is 24 stitches per 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in stockinette stitch with US#4/3.50mm needles on blocked fabric. This gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
Needles and Tools Required
Completing this project requires specific needle sizes and additional tools:
- US#3/3.25mm circular needles, 16 inches (40 centimeters) – Used for the initial cast on and ribbed brim sections
- US#4/3.50mm circular needles, 16 inches (40 centimeters) – Used for the main body colorwork section
- US#4/3.50mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) – Used for crown shaping when the stitch count becomes too small for circular needles
- Six stitch markers – Essential for tracking pattern repeats across the twenty colorwork chart repeats and marking the beginning of round
- Tapestry needle – Used for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the hat
Difficulty Level
The Fairisle 4u is rated as an intermediate knitting project. Knitters should be comfortable with circular knitting, managing multiple stitches on needles, and following stitch charts
