Product Description

Fair Fortune Socks are knitted with lace panels front and back, bordered by mock cables. The stretchy lace patterns produce a comfortable fitting sock and the Eye of Partridge heel flap allows easy adjustment for a good fit at the heel.

The socks are knitted from the cuff down, with a short irregular rib section which flows into the main Fair Fortune lace pattern. The heel flap is worked using the Eye of Partridge slip stitch pattern. The pattern includes a tutorial for a bobble worked over three rounds.

The sock pattern includes both charts and written instructions for the lace and mock cables. Instructions for construction, including the slip-stitch heel are written.

Foot length is adjustable to fit.

What Is Being Made

Fair Fortune Socks are a pair of women's socks designed to fit UK size 7 (US 9½, EU 40) feet. This downloadable knitting pattern produces comfortable, fitted socks with decorative lace panels and cable detailing. The design accommodates different shoe sizes with yardage adjustments, making it adaptable for various foot lengths.

Craft and Primary Technique

Fair Fortune Socks are created using the knitting craft, worked in the round on small-diameter needles. The socks are knitted from the cuff downward, beginning with a short irregular rib at the top. This top-down construction method allows knitters to try on the socks as they progress and adjust the fit at critical points.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

The pattern incorporates multiple stitch techniques to create both function and visual interest:

  • Stockinette stitch – worked in the round as the primary fabric base
  • Lace panels – featured on the front and back of the sock, created using a Fair Fortune Lace Chart that spans 31 stitches and measures approximately 7½ cm (3 inches) wide
  • Mock cables – border the lace panels on each side, adding textural definition
  • Eye of Partridge heel flap – a traditional heel construction technique that provides durability and allows for easy adjustment to achieve a good fit at the heel area
  • Short irregular rib – worked at the cuff for stretch and comfort at the sock opening

Gauge and Tension

The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches and 46 rounds per 10 cm (4 inches) over stockinette stitch worked in the round, measured after blocking. This gauge was achieved using 2.5 mm needles. Knitters should adjust needle size as necessary to achieve the required gauge, as this directly affects the final fit of the socks.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: Approximately 305 metres (335 yards) of 4-ply sock yarn is required for the specified size, with additional yardage needed for larger shoe sizes. The design is shown knitted in Literally Yarn 'Merino Sock,' a blend of 75% merino wool and 25% nylon, which provides both softness and durability. Each 100 g skein contains 425 metres (464 yards). The sample shown is worked in Fuchsia colorway.

Needles: The suggested needle size is 2.5 mm (US 1.5). Knitters should use their preferred needles suitable for small-diameter knitting in the round, such as double-pointed needles, circular needles, or magic loop needles.

Difficulty Level

Fair Fortune Socks are classified as an advanced knitting project. The combination of lace chart reading, cable techniques, and traditional heel construction requires solid knitting skills and experience with working in the round. Knitters should be comfortable following charts and managing multiple stitch patterns simultaneously.

Design Features and Construction Benefits

The stretchy lace patterns in the Fair Fortune design produce a comfortable-fitting sock that moves with the foot while maintaining structure. The Eye of Partridge heel flap is a time-tested technique that provides both durability in a high-wear area and flexibility for customizing the fit. The mock cables framing the lace panels add visual sophistication while the lace itself reduces fabric density, creating breathable socks suitable for various seasons.
