What Is Being Made

Everywhen is a knitted shawl designed by Kelly Spenhoff. This is a one-size triangular shawl with finished measurements of 53.5 inches (136 cm) wide and 24 inches (61 cm) deep. The shawl is worked in two coordinating colors, making it a striking two-tone accessory suitable for intermediate knitters.

Techniques Used

This shawl employs several intermediate knitting techniques that add visual interest and shaping to the finished piece. The construction relies on make 1 increases (both left-leaning and right-leaning variations) to create strategic shaping throughout the design. Yarn overs are incorporated to add decorative eyelet details and lace elements. The pattern also features slip slip knit (ssk) decreases to balance increases and create refined edges. Wrap and turn (W&T) short rows are used to add depth and dimension to the shawl, allowing the knitter to work partial rows that create a three-dimensional drape.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is straightforward and accessible: rows 1 through 3 are worked in knit stitch, while row 4 is purled. Materials and Yarn

The sample shawl was created using Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks That Rock, Lightweight yarn in two colors. The yarn is a 4-ply weight with approximately 405 yards per 146 grams per skein. The two colorways used are A Total Eclipse of the Sun and Deep Unrelenting Gray. The sample consumed approximately 349 yards of Color A and 380 yards of Color B, totaling roughly 729 yards overall. One skein of each color is required to complete the project.

Needles and Notions

Knitters will need US 6 (4 mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches (60 cm) or longer, or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge. A yarn needle is required for weaving in ends upon completion.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 36 rows and 23.5 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm) when working the pattern stitch (rows 1-3 knit, row 4 purl). Achieving accurate gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.

Skill Level
