Everlasting Snowmen Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Everlasting Snowmen pattern by Gift Horse Kits is a beginner-friendly knitting project for creating decorative toy snowmen. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for constructing stuffed snowman figures suitable for holiday decoration or gift-giving. The design produces charming, three-dimensional snowmen characters using basic knitting techniques and simple finishing details.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project uses knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern is designed for beginner knitters, making it an accessible introduction to toy knitting without requiring advanced skills. The snowmen are constructed by knitting flat pieces that are subsequently stuffed and assembled, a fundamental approach in toy knitting that allows crafters to build dimensional forms from two-dimensional knitted fabric.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The Everlasting Snowmen pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and shaping techniques:
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) forms the primary fabric base, creating a smooth, classic knitted surface
- Cast-on begins each piece with 12 stitches in white yarn
- Knit rows and purl rows alternate to build stocking stitch fabric over 20 rows for the body section
- Increase stitches (Inc 1) are used strategically to shape the snowman's proportions, creating the transition from body to head with increases worked twice at the beginning and end of rows
- Stuffing and assembly techniques transform flat knitted pieces into three-dimensional toy forms
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The pattern specifies chunky weight yarn throughout, which creates quick results and substantial fabric suitable for toy construction. Specific yarn recommendations include:
- White yarn: One ball of Hayfield Bonus Chunky for the main snowman body
- Blue yarn: Small amount of chunky blue yarn, with recommendations for Robin Chunky in Blue (colour 33) or King Cole Comfort Chunky in Laguna, though any chunky blue yarn is acceptable
- Red yarn: Small amount of chunky red yarn, with Hayfield Bonus Chunky in Signal Red (colour 977) recommended, with flexibility for equivalent yarns in other chunky ranges
Tools and Notions
The pattern requires the following equipment and finishing materials:
- 3mm straight knitting needles as the primary tool, with optional 4mm needles available for crafters preferring a looser knit tension
- Toy stuffing for filling the knitted pieces and creating dimensional form
- 2 pairs of 6mm black toy safety eyes with click-on backs for facial features
- Darning needle for weaving in yarn ends
- Sewing needle for attaching safety eyes and other finishing details
- Black cotton thread for embroidery or additional facial details
- Small amounts of pink and blue felt for creating noses and other decorative elements
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized with clear sections beginning with material requirements and proceeding to construction instructions. The body section demonstrates the fundamental shaping approach: pieces begin with a cast-on of 12 stitches and are worked in stocking stitch before strategic increases expand the stitch count to accommodate the head section, progressing from 12 stitches to 16 stitches and then to 20 stitches through methodical increase placement.
