Product Description

Legends of Rock pattern #5- inspired by Carlos Santana.

“Europa” (the musical composition) starts out slow, gentle and meandering. As it progresses, it gets more intense and complex. “Europa” (the shawl) starts out slow, too, but builds quickly with interesting colorplay and increasingly complex lace patterns.

The shawl is worked from the top down. The lace sections are both written and charted.

Skill level: Advanced - requires advanced lacework on both right and wrong sides; uses right, left and centered double decreases, ssk, ssp, p2tog

Yarn requirements: 370 yards (338 m) Color 1 350 yards (320 m) Colors 2 For maximum effect, choose Color 1 as a highly variegated colorway and Color 2 as a solid or semi-solid using one color from Color 1.

Sample shown in Lazy Cat Yarn Elemental in “Firedragon” (Color 1) and “Very Good Finders” (Color 2).

This piece also works up beautifully in a single solid colorway or in a gradient.

Europa Shawl by Laurie Beardsley

Design Inspiration and Construction

Europa is an advanced knitting shawl designed by Laurie Beardsley and inspired by the musical composition "Europa" by Carlos Santana. Like the piece of music that begins slowly and builds in intensity and complexity, this shawl follows a similar progression. The design starts with gentle, meandering sections and develops into increasingly intricate lace patterns with interesting colorplay, creating a dynamic visual experience that mirrors the musical composition's structure, including the interplay between two guitarists featured in some recordings.

Finished Dimensions

The completed Europa shawl measures 52 inches (132 centimeters) across the wingspan and 26 inches (66 centimeters) in depth, making it a substantial triangular or crescent-shaped wrap suitable for layering and everyday wear.

Yarn and Materials Required

This project uses fingering weight yarn (also called 4-ply weight), requiring a total of approximately 720 yards of yarn divided between two colors:

  • Color 1: 370 yards (338 meters)
  • Color 2: 350 yards (320 meters)

For maximum visual impact, Laurie Beardsley recommends selecting Color 1 as a highly variegated colorway and Color 2 as a solid or semi-solid shade that pulls one color from the variegated Color 1, creating cohesive color harmony throughout the finished piece.

Additional materials include a US 4 (3.5 millimeter) circular knitting needle, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers (optional), and blocking supplies for finishing.

Gauge and Sizing Flexibility

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 to 20 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette and eyelet patterns after blocking. While gauge is not critical for this design, variations will affect the total yardage consumed and influence the final size and drape characteristics of the finished shawl.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Europa employs advanced knitting techniques appropriate for experienced knitters. The shawl features lace patterns that increase in complexity as the design progresses, combined with stockinette stitch sections and eyelet patterns that create the colorplay effects. The two-color construction allows for visual contrast and depth, with the interplay between the variegated and solid colorways enhancing the shawl's dynamic appearance.

The progressive complexity of the lace work means that knitters will encounter increasingly intricate stitch combinations and pattern repeats as they move through the project, making it suitable for advanced-level knitters seeking a challenging and musically-inspired design.
