Product Description

This classy coat is worked seamlessly from the bottom up with A-line shaping, a squishy garter stitch body, and garter rib around the yoke. Stitches are then picked up around the armholes to work top-down, short-row sleeve caps and sleeves. Wide ribbed edges and a doubled neckband add extra protection for chilly days.

Eulalie Coat by Triona Murphy

What is Being Made

The Eulalie Coat is a seamlessly constructed children's cardigan designed by Triona Murphy. This knitted coat is available in six sizes ranging from 3–6 months through 6–8 years, with finished chest measurements from 18 inches (45.5 cm) to 26.5 inches (67.5 cm). The garment is worked as a single piece without seams, creating a smooth, polished finish ideal for a classic children's coat.

Craft and Primary Technique

The Eulalie Coat is a knitting project suitable for knitters with intermediate skill level. The coat is worked seamlessly in the round using circular needles, a technique that eliminates the need for seaming and allows for continuous construction from the body through the sleeves. This method produces a professional appearance and reduces finishing work.

Stitches and Construction Details

The primary stitch used throughout this design is garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row when working flat or alternating knit and purl rounds when working in the round. Garter stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges that is both visually interesting and structurally stable—ideal for a children's coat that requires durability and a classic aesthetic. The pattern includes stitch markers (at least 2 removable markers are required) to track pattern repeats and construction points, and waste yarn is used for provisional cast-ons or stitch holders during the seamless construction process.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Eulalie Coat calls for Malabrigo Yarn Rios, a premium yarn composed of 100% merino wool. This yarn is supplied in 100-gram skeins, each containing 210 yards (192 meters). The pattern requires worsted weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition and creates a fabric with good structure suitable for outerwear. Yardage requirements vary by size: 2 skeins for the smallest size (3–6 months), increasing to 5 skeins for the largest size (6–8 years). The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in the colorway Hollyhock.

Needles and Tools

Construction of the Eulalie Coat requires three sets of circular needles in graduated sizes to accommodate gauge changes throughout the pattern:

  • US #5 [3.75 mm] circular needle, 16–24 inches long, with a matching set of double-pointed needles for working small circumferences in the round
  • US #6 [4.0 mm] circular needle, 16–24 inches long, with a matching set of double-pointed needles for working small circumferences in the round
  • US #7 [4.5 mm] circular needle, 16–24 inches long

The use of progressively larger needles allows the knitter to create subtle shaping and fabric variations. Double-pointed needles or preferred alternatives for small-circumference knitting are essential for working the sleeves as the circumference decreases.

Gauge and Finishing Notions

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 20 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in garter stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly in children's garments where size accuracy is critical. Knitters should always swatch and adjust needle size if necessary to match this gauge.

Additional notions required include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and any necessary seaming, and 4 to 5 buttons measuring 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) in diameter, depending on size, for the front closure. The button quantity ranges from 4 buttons for the smallest three sizes to 5 buttons for the larger sizes.
