Etobicoke Hat by Kiku Corner
What Is Being Made
The Etobicoke Hat is a knitted adult-sized beanie inspired by the numbered streets of Southern Etobicoke, Toronto. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a classic pull-on hat that can be customized into a slouchy beanie style by adding additional pattern repeats. The design showcases the beauty of tonal hand-dyed yarn through its straightforward stitch pattern, making it an excellent project for displaying variegated or solid-colored DK weight yarn.
Techniques Used
This hat is knit from the bottom up, a construction method that allows for easy customization of length. The pattern features simple, repeating bands that create visual interest without complex shaping. Decreases are worked in 10-stitch repeats, providing a structured approach to crown shaping that makes the pattern easily scalable for different head sizes. The straightforward construction makes this an ideal project for knitters new to hat making.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch: Creates smooth, V-shaped fabric that forms the primary visual texture
- Reverse Stockinette Stitch: Produces the characteristic bumpy texture and alternates with stockinette to create regular horizontal bands
- 8-Row Pattern Repeat: The core design element alternates between knit and purl bands in an 8-row sequence that can be repeated to adjust hat length
Materials
This pattern requires 1 skein of DK weight yarn totaling approximately 200 meters. The original design was created using Valentine Colour Works Cashmere Blend DK, though any DK weight wool or wool blend yarn is suitable. DK weight yarn, also known as light worsted or 3-ply, is a medium-lightweight yarn that knits to approximately 22-24 stitches per 4 inches, making it ideal for hats with good drape and warmth. The pattern calls for knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn, typically in the US 4-6 range, though needle size may be adjusted smaller for children's versions or larger for oversized adult versions.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner-friendly pattern, the Etobicoke Hat is perfect for knitters new to hat construction. The simple alternating stitch pattern requires only basic knitting knowledge, and the straightforward decreases make crown shaping manageable for less experienced knitters.
Customization Options
The pattern is highly customizable. To create a longer slouchy beanie, simply add additional 8-row repeats of the purl and knit design. For smaller heads, use smaller needles with thinner yarn, or cast on fewer stitches in multiples of 20 to maintain the 10-stitch repeat decreases. This flexibility makes the Etobicoke Hat suitable for the entire family, from babies to adults.
