Eternal Joy Shawl by rhyFlower Knits
What Is Being Made
The Eternal Joy is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by rhyFlower Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the beginner level. The shawl is worked on circular needles and requires approximately 790 yards of fingering weight yarn to complete.
Craft and Technique
This project uses the knitting craft exclusively. The shawl is constructed using circular needles, which allow for seamless working in the round or flat, depending on the pattern's construction method. The intermediate skill level indicates that knitters will encounter more complex stitch patterns and techniques than basic knit and purl work, making this an excellent project for developing advanced knitting skills.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The Eternal Joy shawl incorporates a variety of knitting stitches and techniques to create its design:
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch used throughout the pattern
- Purl (P): Creates texture and pattern variation
- Yarn Over (YO): Generates decorative eyelet holes and lace elements
- Increases: Including the (k1, yo, k1) technique worked into a single stitch, which increases by 2 stitches in one stitch
- Decreases: K2tog (knit 2 stitches together) and K3tog (knit 3 stitches together) reduce stitch count
- Cable Stitches: The 1/1 RC (right cable) technique, which involves slipping stitches to a cable needle and crossing them over subsequent stitches for textured cable effects
- Slip Stitches: Including Sl2-k1-p2sso (slip 2 stitches together knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over) for decorative decreasing
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Eternal Joy shawl requires 790 yards (722 meters) of fingering weight yarn. The suggested yarn is Ancient Arts Yarn – Revival, a luxurious blend composed of 49% Wool, 34% Mohair, 11% Nylon, 4% Acrylic, and 2% Silk. This fiber composition creates a soft, warm, and slightly elastic fabric ideal for shawl drape and wearability.
Needles and Tools
The pattern calls for US6 (4 mm) circular needles measuring 40 inches (100 cm), or the size needed to obtain the correct gauge. Additional notions required include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and a cable needle for working the cable stitches featured in the design.
