This pattern was designed in memory of my dad, and I will be donating 70% of pattern sales to the charity Cruse Bereavement Care.
There is no specific gauge for this pattern, but please try to keep your tension tight. When using the same yarn and hook size, your horse should measure roughly 7 inches tall.
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner – some of the techniques used may be a little tricky, but there are plenty of instructions and photographs to guide you throughout the pattern.
Ernie the Horse: Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Ernie the Horse is a charming crochet amigurumi toy designed by Grace Robson. This little colt stands approximately 7 inches tall (18cm) when completed with the specified yarn and hook size. Ernie is a foal character with personality and dreams, complete with a jockey outfit, making it an endearing handmade toy perfect for collectors or as a gift for children who love horses and imaginative play.
Craft and Techniques
This is a crochet pattern using amigurumi construction methods. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small, stuffed three-dimensional toys and figurines. The pattern is written in US Terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with American crochet conventions. The design incorporates shaping and sculpting techniques typical of amigurumi work, allowing crafters to create a dimensional horse figure with distinct features.
The pattern is classified as Advanced Beginner difficulty level, indicating that while some techniques may present challenges, the pattern includes helpful support. Photographers and detailed tips are provided throughout to guide crafters through potentially tricky sections, making it suitable for those with some crochet experience who are ready to tackle more complex projects.
Stitches and Construction
Although specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided content, amigurumi patterns typically employ fundamental crochet stitches such as single crochet, slip stitches, and increases and decreases to shape the toy. The pattern uses standard crochet construction methods to build Ernie's body, limbs, head, and facial features, with stuffing creating the three-dimensional form characteristic of amigurumi toys.
Materials
- Yarn Weight: DK (Double Knit) weight yarn, which provides an appropriate thickness for creating a small, detailed toy with good stitch definition
- Hook Size: The pattern specifies a particular hook size that works with DK yarn; using the recommended hook and yarn combination will achieve the finished 7-inch height
- Additional Materials: Stuffing material is required to fill Ernie and create the amigurumi's characteristic plump, three-dimensional shape
Pattern Details
This downloadable PDF pattern is an original design by Grace Robson (graciebobbins), created in 2021. The pattern carries personal significance, as Ernie was designed in memory of the designer's father, Ernest, who shared a childhood dream of becoming a jockey—a theme reflected in Ernie's character and outfit. The pattern is intended for personal use only, allowing crafters to create finished toys for themselves or as gifts.
