What Is Being Made
The Eria Vest is a sleeveless, drop-shoulder waistcoat designed for layering during cold weather. This knitted vest features a distinctive large, cozy cowl neck and faux button bands that add visual interest while maintaining the garment's simple aesthetic. The Eria is versatile enough to layer over long- or short-sleeved tees and can be styled casually with jeans and boots or dressed up with a skirt.
Sizing and Finished Measurements
The Eria Vest is available in 11 sizes with finished bust measurements ranging from 34 inches to 54 inches. The pattern suggests an ease of 2 to 3 inches, allowing for comfortable layering over other garments.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Eria Vest employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The garment is constructed using circular needles to work in the round, which is a common method for creating seamless or nearly seamless garments. The drop-shoulder construction simplifies shaping while creating a relaxed, modern silhouette. The cowl neck is a key design feature that provides extra warmth and visual impact. Faux button bands are incorporated as a design element, offering decorative appeal without requiring functional buttonholes.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch for the main body of the vest, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. Ribbing is used for structural elements, typically found in cuffs and collar areas to provide elasticity and a finished appearance.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn: The Eria Vest is designed to be knit in worsted weight yarn. The pattern is shown in Knit Picks Reverie, a blend of 80% Baby Alpaca and 20% Acrylic, displayed in the colorway "Gemstone." Yardage requirements range from approximately 625 yards for the smallest size (34 inches) to 1,225 yards for the largest size (54 inches).
Needles: The pattern calls for US 7 / 4.5 mm circular needles for stockinette stitch and the collar, and US 6 / 4 mm circular needles for ribbing, or needles sized to match the required gauge.
Additional Notions: The vest requires 10 to 12 buttons sized 7/8 inch or 1 inch for the decorative button bands. Crafters may choose to use 1 yard of 1-inch-wide grosgrain ribbon (in a matching or contrasting color) or 10 to 12 smaller buttons for the inside of the garment. A tapestry needle is needed for finishing and weaving in ends.
Difficulty Level
The Eria Vest is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with circular needles and basic shaping techniques.
