Product Description

Very feminine without frills, this top down raglan pullover will be a graceful addition to any wardrobe. It can be made with or without the ribbon lacing at the sides and sleeves, but is easy to personalize by changing up the colors. After working a 3-rnd neckband in seed stitch, the raglan shaping begins, along with short-rows to shape the front neck. Worked mainly in stockinette, this piece knits up quickly, including waist shaping. Simple lace panels are added at each side of the body which is divided above the seed stitch hem to work a short slit. The sleeves are worked in the round with a narrower version of the lace panel worked at the center of each sleeve. Below the lace panel, a few stitches are increased for a slight bell shape to the cuff before working the cuff in seed stitch. To finish, use a ribbon or ribbon yarn to thread through each of the lace panels. Make sure to use a ribbon without wire edges.

En Pointe Raglan Knit Sweater by Therese Chynoweth

What Is Being Made

The En Pointe Raglan is a long sleeve raglan pullover sweater designed by Therese Chynoweth for intermediate knitters. This classic pullover features a standard fitting silhouette available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3XL, with finished bust measurements from 32 inches (81.5 cm) to 55¾ inches (141.5 cm) and lengths from 22¾ inches (58 cm) to 25¾ inches (65.5 cm). The design is shown in size Small and uses a straightforward sizing approach where you select a size with 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) of positive ease over your actual bust measurement.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This sweater is constructed using circular knitting techniques, which allows for seamless construction and efficient working in the round. The pattern utilizes both circular needles in two different lengths and double-pointed needles, a standard approach for knitting fitted garments from the top down or bottom up. The raglan sleeve style—characterized by diagonal seam lines running from the underarm to the neckline—is a popular construction method that provides excellent fit and ease of movement. This intermediate-level project teaches fundamental sweater construction skills while maintaining an approachable complexity level.

Stitches and Stitch Details

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the En Pointe Raglan employs standard knitting stitches appropriate for DK weight yarn. The pattern instructions are written for the smallest size (XS) with larger sizes provided in parentheses, a common notation system that allows multiple sizes to be worked from a single set of instructions. This format requires careful attention to tracking which numbers apply to your chosen size throughout the pattern.

Yarn and Materials

The En Pointe Raglan is designed for DK weight yarn (Light #3 category), requiring between 845 yards (773 meters) for the smallest size and 1,528 yards (1,397 meters) for the largest size. The pattern is shown in Shibui Knits Echo, a luxury blend composed of 52% silk noil and 48% fine merino wool, which provides a sophisticated drape and subtle sheen appropriate for a garment named "En Pointe." This yarn is available in 160-yard (146-meter) hanks weighing 1.41 ounces (40 grams) each, with the sample shown in color #2002 Graphite requiring 6 to 10 hanks depending on size.

Needles Required

Construction requires US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles in two lengths—a 16-inch (40 cm) needle for working smaller circumferences such as the neckline and cuffs, and a 32-inch (80 cm) needle for the body sections. Additionally, a set of 4 or 5 double-pointed needles in the same size is needed for working the crown of the sleeves and other small circumference sections where circular needles become impractical. This needle combination is standard for seamless raglan sweater construction.

Skill Level and Pattern Format

Rated as Intermediate difficulty, the En Pointe Raglan is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle a full garment project. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing you to access the complete instructions digitally. This format is convenient for printing or referencing on devices while working.
