Emo Knitted Shawl by Monique Pons
What is Being Made
Emo is an advanced knitted shawl pattern designed by Monique Pons for LA FONTAINE DES FAITS. This is a substantial triangular or crescent-shaped shawl with a finished wingspan of 275 cm (108 inches) along the top edge and a width of 52 cm (20.5 inches), making it a generous wrap suitable for layering or draping.
Yarn and Materials
The shawl is constructed using 100% merino wool in a 4-ply weight. The pattern calls for two skeins totaling 800 meters (874 yards) of yarn: one skein in green apple (C2) and one skein in speckled grey (C1). The yarn is sourced from EmiB, a specialty yarn supplier. Knitting is worked on 4 mm (US6) circular needles, with two 80 cm circular needles recommended for managing the expanding stitch count as the shawl grows.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced pattern employs brioche knitting techniques, a sophisticated method that creates a textured, dimensional fabric with excellent drape and elasticity. The brioche technique involves working with yarn overs and slipped stitches from the previous row, creating a distinctive ribbed appearance.
- Brioche Knit (brk) – Also known as a bark stitch, this technique knits a slipped stitch together with its yarn over from the previous row, creating raised texture
- Brioche Purl (brp) – Also known as a burp stitch, this mirrors the brioche knit but uses a purl motion to work the slipped stitch with its yarn over
- Slip 1 Yarn Over (sl1yo) – A foundational brioche technique where yarn is brought forward, the next stitch is slipped purlwise, and yarn is brought over the needle to create the yarn over for the next row
- Standard Decreases – The pattern uses k2tog (knit 2 stitches together) for shaping
- Increases – Kfb (knit front and back of stitch) is used to increase stitch count
- Basic Stitches – Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the foundation of the pattern structure
Pattern Difficulty and Gauge
Emo is classified as an advanced knitting pattern, appropriate for experienced knitters familiar with brioche techniques and complex stitch sequences. Notably, gauge is not crucial for this particular design, allowing knitters flexibility in their tension and needle choices while maintaining the intended shawl proportions.
