Emma's First Cable Shawl
What Is Being Made
Emma's First Cable Shawl is a knitted triangular shawl designed by Emma Du as an intermediate-level project. This versatile accessory measures 147cm by 110cm (58.8 inches by 44 inches) when finished, making it a substantial wrap suitable for keeping warm during autumn and winter months. The shawl combines decorative cable elements with garter stitch sections, creating an interesting textured design that appears more complex than its construction actually is.
Techniques Used
The shawl employs a construction method that begins with a small cast-on and expands outward, which is typical of triangular shawl designs. The pattern incorporates cables as a primary decorative element, twisted throughout the fabric to create visual interest. Garter stitch forms the foundation of the shawl, providing a classic, reversible texture. The designer notes that while the pattern may appear complicated at first glance, once knitters understand the construction method, the project progresses quickly. This makes it an excellent project for knitting while watching television or socializing, as the repetitive nature of the stitches becomes meditative once established.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:
- Knit stitch (k) — the primary stitch forming the fabric
- Purl stitch (p) — used in specific sections to create texture variation
- Knit front and back (kfb) — an increase technique used during the base construction to expand the shawl
- Cable stitches — twisted stitches that create the decorative cable pattern throughout the design
- Garter stitch — created by knitting every row, forming horizontal ridges
Materials
The shawl requires 4 balls of sport-weight yarn totaling approximately 900 meters (based on 225m per 50g ball). The recommended yarn is composed of 55% pure wool and 45% cotton blend, offering warmth from the wool while the cotton adds breathability and drape. This fiber content requires handwashing only to maintain the yarn's integrity.
Needles required are 4.0mm circular needles measuring 80cm (32 inches) in length, used for knitting flat. The gauge is 22 stitches and 32 rows per 10cm in stockinette stitch, which helps determine the finished dimensions and ensures proper fit.
