Product Description
This fabulous little cardigan is lightweight and pretty, bringing a contemporary feel to the traditional matinee cardigan.
Offered in one size to fit a 16” to 18” chest, this pattern would also work up wonderfully from just one skein of sock yarn (which, of course, makes it super easy to care for - essential during those mad early weeks with a baby).
The yoke increases are carefully incorporated into the pretty eyelet bands and the textured pattern adds warmth and interest, whilst at the same time making the rows easy to count. The button and buttonhole bands are worked at the same time as the main body, meaning that there is very little sewing up, and the buttonholes are placed elegantly at the end of each eyelet row.
The sleeves are gathered gently into the pretty cuff, which is generous in size so that under-sleeves can be helped down and the sleeve can be worn as 3/4 length as the baby grows.
Elsie Cardigan by Stella Ackroyd
What is Being Made
Elsie is a knitted cardigan designed for infants aged 0-3 months, with a chest measurement of 46cm (18 inches) and a length to shoulder of 23cm (9 inches). This is a top-down construction cardigan featuring button closures, making it practical for dressing and undressing babies. The short sleeve length of 8cm (3 inches) makes it suitable as a layering piece or lightweight outer garment for newborns and very young infants.
Techniques Used
The Elsie cardigan is worked from the neck downwards, a construction method that allows for seamless shaping and the ability to try on the garment as you progress. This top-down approach is particularly useful for infant garments where precise fit is important. The pattern incorporates buttonhole placement strategically along the front opening, and uses yarn over increases to create shaping within the garment structure. The cardigan is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for an intermediate-level knitter.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) – the primary stitch forming the fabric structure
- Purl stitch (P) – used in combination with knit stitches
- Stocking stitch – the main fabric pattern, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic finish
- Yarn over (yo) – creates decorative holes and is used for increases within the pattern
- Make one stitch (m1) – an invisible increase worked by knitting into the back of the strand lying between stitches
- Decreases (dec) – used to shape the garment
- Buttonholes – incorporated into the front bands for button closure
Materials
The Elsie cardigan requires 100 grams of 4-ply yarn in a single ball. The pattern was photographed in Cascade Heritage Solids in Grey 5660, though the yarn weight specification allows for substitution with other 4-ply options. Construction requires one pair of 3.25mm (US 3) knitting needles and five buttons for fastening. The tension is 28 stitches and 40 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over stocking stitch using the specified needles, which is important to achieve the correct finished measurements for this infant garment.
