What you'll need
Product Description
The word Eloquent is usually used to describe speaking, meaning clear and strong. The idea for this cable design has been a very clear and strong idea in my mind for a long time. And I'm very happy that it's now more than just an idea, it's a pattern that anyone can choose to knit!
This hat is seamless and can be knit with either dpns or circular needles. You'll also need a cable needle and a stitch marker to mark the beginning of round.
One size fits most adults: 50cm / 19 ½” circumference, 21.5cm / 8 ½” height
You may not copy, sell, reproduce or distribute this pattern however you are free to sell finished objects made from the pattern, but please credit me as the designer, and include a link to this page if possible.
Eloquent Hat by Charlotte McHale
What Is Being Made
The Eloquent Hat is a knitted adult-sized hat designed by Charlotte McHale. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished hat with a circumference of 50cm (19 ½ inches) and a height of 21.5cm (8 ½ inches), fitting most adults comfortably. The hat features a sophisticated stitch pattern that combines knit and purl stitches with cable techniques to create visual interest and texture throughout the design.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques that add depth and complexity to the finished garment. The primary construction method uses circular knitting, worked in the round to create a seamless crown. The pattern incorporates cable stitches as a central design element, requiring the use of a double pointed needle (dpn) to hold stitches while working cables. Multiple cable variations are featured throughout the design, including left-leaning and right-leaning cables of different sizes. Decreasing techniques such as knit 2 stitches together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) are used to shape the crown of the hat as the knitter progresses toward the top. The pattern also employs stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping points during the circular knitting process.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Eloquent Hat utilizes a main stitch pattern worked over 12 rounds that combines fundamental knitting stitches with decorative cable techniques. The core stitches include:
- Knit (K) and Purl (P) stitches forming the base fabric
- Knit 2 stitches together (K2tog) and Purl 2 stitches together (P2tog) for decreasing
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) for left-leaning decreases
- 3/Left Cable (3LC) – slip 3 stitches to dpn, hold in front of work, knit 3, then knit 3 from dpn
- 5/Left Cable (5LC) – slip 5 stitches to dpn, hold in front of work, knit 5, then knit 5 from dpn
- 2/3LC – slip 2 stitches to dpn, hold in front of work, knit 3, then knit 2 from dpn
- 1/2LC – slip 1 stitch to dpn, hold in front of work, knit 2, then knit 1 from dpn
- 3/4RC (Right Cable) – slip 3 stitches to dpn, hold behind work, knit 4, then knit 3 from dpn
The main pattern, consisting of rounds 1 through 12, is repeated throughout the body of the hat to create the overall design. Tension is critical for this project: 20 stitches and 28 rows of the main pattern should measure 10cm (4 inches) square.
Materials and Tools
The Eloquent Hat requires up to 125 meters of Aran weight yarn. The pictured sample was created using Drops Big Merino, an aran-weight yarn choice that provides warmth and drape suitable for hat construction. Knitters will need 4mm (UK 8 / US 6) double pointed or circular needles for the main knitting and 4.5mm (UK 7 / US 7) double pointed or circular needles for any ribbed cuff or edge work, depending on the pattern's full specifications. A double pointed needle is also required for working the cable stitches throughout the design.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. Knitters should be comfortable with circular knitting techniques, cable work, and stitch decreasing before beginning this project. The combination of cable stitches and shaping requires attention to pattern instructions and stitch placement, making it suitable for knitters with some prior experience beyond basic stockinette stitch.
