Product Description

Ellie is a loose pullover with ¾-length sleeves knit in one piece from side to side.

It is worked from left sleeve to right sleeve with a wide opening for a neck.

After the body is finished, it needs to be folded in half and seamed, then stitches are picked up from the lower part of the body and worked circularly in 2x2 rib.

Contrasting color cuffs and bottom give that simple sweater a new and interesting look.

Sample is shown in Anilux Sonata.

Ellie Pullover by Hanna Maciejewska

What is Being Made

Ellie is a loose-fitting pullover sweater designed with three-quarter length sleeves. This downloadable knitting pattern is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3X, with chest measurements from 30 inches (75 cm) to 54 inches (135 cm). The pullover is engineered to be worn with 2½ to 3 inches (6¼ to 7½ cm) of positive ease, creating a relaxed, comfortable silhouette suitable for everyday wear.

Techniques and Construction

The Ellie pullover employs intermediate-level knitting techniques appropriate for knitters with foundational skills. The garment is constructed using circular needles for seamless knitting, which is a modern approach to sweater construction that minimizes seaming and creates a polished finish. The pattern incorporates specialty stitches that add visual interest and texture to the finished piece.

The design features two distinct stitch patterns that work together to create the sweater's aesthetic. These stitch techniques require attention to detail and understanding of yarn overs, decreases, and basic colorwork principles, making this an ideal project for intermediate-level knitters seeking to expand their technical repertoire.

Stitches Used

  • Double Lace Rib: This stitch pattern works on multiples of two stitches and creates an openwork, lacy effect. It alternates between yarn overs and decreases (ssk on right-side rows and k2tog on alternating right-side rows) with purl stitches on wrong-side rows, producing an elegant, semi-transparent fabric with vertical lines.
  • Seed Stitch: A fundamental textured stitch that alternates knit and purl stitches to create a bumpy, fabric-like appearance with no curl at the edges.
  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the garment, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows, producing the smooth, classic knit fabric base.

Materials and Specifications

The Ellie pullover pattern recommends Anilux Sonata yarn (70% cotton, 30% viscose blend) or any comparable sport weight or 5-ply yarn. Each skein contains 100 grams and yields 321 yards (294 meters). Yardage requirements vary by size: smaller sizes (XS, S, M) require 3 skeins of main color and 1 skein of contrasting color, while larger sizes (L, XL, 2X, 3X) require 4 to 5 skeins of main color and 2 to 3 skeins of contrasting color.

The pattern calls for US 2½ to 3 mm (size 1 to 3) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80 cm) for the body, along with matching double-pointed needles (dpn) in the same size for working the sleeves and neckline. Additional notions include one stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and a sewing needle with matching thread for finishing and seaming any necessary areas.

Gauge is critical for this project: 23 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) measured in stockinette stitch. The pattern designer notes that she knits loosely, so knitters may need to adjust needle size or select a different yarn weight to achieve the correct gauge and ensure proper fit.

The sport weight yarn classification makes this an ideal choice for creating a lightweight, breathable garment with drape, particularly suitable for the cotton-viscose blend's natural fiber properties that provide comfort and wearability across seasons.
