Product Description
Behold the Elementary Rainbow Blanket! I’m almost embarrassed to post this pattern because it is SO basic but I thought it may be helpful to beginners. It is a granny square using clusters of 3 double crochet. I made this in Paintbox Cotton Aran and I have to say I love the feel of this yarn when it’s worked up. It’s the perfect summer blanket weight. You can make it as small or as big as you want by stopping or adding rounds so gauge isn’t really important. (I’ve noticed that gauge doesn’t matter in a lot of my designs lately. Hmmm…Could it be I don’t like making gauge swatches? Something on which to reflect!) Let’s get started!
Elementary Rainbow Blanket by Hiyo Crochet
Project Overview
The Elementary Rainbow Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket designed by Emily Lloyd of Hiyo Crochet. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring 32 inches by 32 inches, making it an ideal project for those new to crochet or looking for a straightforward, satisfying make. The blanket's modular construction using granny squares means crafters can easily customize the final size by adding or omitting rounds, providing flexibility without the need for precise gauge matching.
Construction Technique
The Elementary Rainbow Blanket employs a classic granny square construction method, one of the most fundamental and beloved techniques in crochet. This approach breaks the blanket into manageable square units that are worked individually and then joined together. The modular nature of granny squares makes this pattern particularly accessible for beginners, as each square can be completed in a single session, building confidence and momentum throughout the project.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The primary stitch used throughout this pattern is the double crochet, organized into clusters of 3 double crochet. These clusters form the decorative elements of each granny square. The straightforward stitch combination means beginners can focus on developing consistent tension and rhythm without navigating complex stitch variations or advanced techniques.
Materials and Yarn
This pattern calls for Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, a 100% cotton yarn in aran weight. The yarn specifications are 1.7 ounces per skein with approximately 93 yards per 50-gram skein. The pattern uses 4 skeins of Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran in shade #608 Vanilla Cream along with 2 skeins of additional colors to create the rainbow effect. Cotton aran weight yarn is ideal for summer blankets, offering a breathable, drape-friendly fabric that feels comfortable when worked up. The aran weight classification ensures the blanket works up at a moderate pace, striking a balance between quick progress and a finished piece with appropriate structure and weight.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it perfect for those just starting their crochet journey. The designer intentionally created this pattern to support newcomers to the craft, focusing on fundamental techniques without overwhelming complexity. The emphasis on basic stitches and straightforward construction means beginners can complete a full-sized blanket while building essential crochet skills.
Customization and Flexibility
One of the standout features of the Elementary Rainbow Blanket is its flexibility regarding gauge and sizing. Since the blanket is constructed by adding or stopping rounds as desired, precise gauge matching is not critical to the project's success. Crafters can make the blanket smaller for a baby blanket or larger for a full-sized throw simply by adjusting the number of rounds worked on each square, making this pattern adaptable to individual preferences and yarn availability.
