Product Description
The Elemental Cowl is a ribbed cowl worked in joined rounds and is totally seamless! Just be sure to turn your work after completing each round.
This cowl has 2 increase rounds to make space for the shoulders, allowing for a better fit. You can repeat the increase rounds as many times as you like, until reaching your desired cowl circumference at the shoulders, or omit them completely. You can adjust the width/circumference by adding or subtracting from the foundation chain until reaching your desired neck circumference, then follow the pattern as written. Stitch counts are included at the end of each round where a change occurs.
Elemental Cowl by Janine Myska
What is Being Made
The Elemental Cowl is a beginner-friendly crochet cowl designed by Janine Myska. This finished accessory measures approximately 10 inches tall with a circumference that ranges from 27 inches at the narrow opening to 30 inches at the wider opening, making it a versatile neckwear piece suitable for various head sizes and styling preferences.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The cowl is worked flat rather than in continuous rounds, which simplifies construction and makes it easier to maintain consistent tension. A key technique featured in this design is working in the back loops only, which creates a distinctive textured appearance and adds visual interest to the finished piece.
Stitches and Construction
The Elemental Cowl is constructed primarily using single crochet, one of the most fundamental and versatile crochet stitches. Single crochet creates a dense, sturdy fabric that works beautifully with bulky yarn and provides excellent drape for a cowl. The pattern begins with a foundation chain that can be adjusted to achieve your desired cowl circumference, offering flexibility for customization.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern calls for chunky weight yarn (category 5 bulky weight). The original design uses WeCrochet Swish Bulky in Black, which is composed of 100% Fine Superwash Merino Wool. You will need approximately 2 hanks or 240 yards of similar bulky weight yarn that matches the specified gauge. A US K/10 1/2 (6.5 mm) crochet hook is required for this project. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and optionally a ball winder and swift to prepare your yarn.
Gauge and Fit
The pattern specifies a gauge of 4 inches equaling 11 stitches and 14 rows in single crochet. Achieving this gauge is important for obtaining the finished measurements. The pattern is adaptable—by adjusting the beginning chain length, you can easily modify the cowl to achieve your preferred circumference, making it customizable for different preferences and yarn weights.
