Product Description

A smart & stylish cardigan worked in a background of stocking stitch. What makes the difference with this design is the triangular shaped chevron patterning, placed in just the right position to flatter. These are not difficult to work either. The triangles end with just 2 stitches in reverse stocking stitch which are then carried on to the shoulder seams and to the tops of the sleeves. This adds to the neat and flattering silhouette of this cardigan.

Elegant Cardigan with Triangular Ribby Panels by Pat Menchini

Project Overview

This is a downloadable knitting pattern for an elegant cardigan featuring distinctive triangular ribbed panels. Designed by Pat Menchini as an intermediate-level knitting project, this cardigan combines classic construction with decorative ribbed detailing for a sophisticated finished garment.

What Is Being Made

The Elegant Cardigan with Triangular Ribby Panels is a button-front cardigan available in six sizes to fit bust measurements ranging from 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) up to 132-137 cm (52-54 inches). The cardigan features triangular ribbed panels as a design element and is constructed to be worn with actual bust measurements from 91 cm (36 inches) to 146 cm (57¾ inches). The garment includes a length to shoulder shaping of 56-61 cm (22-24 inches) and consistent sleeve seams of 44 cm (17½ inches) across all sizes. The cardigan is fastened with nine buttons.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate knitting project utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary fabric construction. The pattern incorporates ribbed stitches to create the distinctive triangular ribby panels that give the cardigan its elegant character. The combination of these stitch techniques requires intermediate knitting skills and familiarity with shaping, as the pattern includes shoulder shaping.

Construction involves working flat pieces on straight needles, with techniques including stitch holders for managing stitches during assembly. The pattern requires careful tension work to ensure proper fit across multiple size options.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Yarn: Debbie Bliss Rialto DK Heathers in the shade Bordeaux. This yarn is a DK weight (double knit), which is a versatile mid-weight yarn suitable for creating garments with good drape and structure. The yardage per ball is 105 metres or 114 yards per 50g ball. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 12 to 15 50g balls depending on the selected size.

Needles: The pattern requires two different needle sizes to create proper fabric tension and structure. A pair of 3.25 mm needles (UK size 10/USA size 3) is used for ribbing or edgings, while a pair of 4 mm needles (UK size 8/USA size 6) is used for the main fabric. The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stockinette stitch using the 4 mm needles, making tension testing essential before beginning the project.

Additional Notions: One stitch holder is required for managing stitches during construction, and nine buttons are needed to complete the cardigan front closure.

Pattern Notes

Yarn amounts provided in the pattern are approximate and based on average requirements. The pattern recommends testing tension before starting, as proper gauge is critical for achieving the correct finished measurements. If tension is too loose, a finer needle should be used; if too tight, a larger needle should be substituted. When selecting replacement yarn, matching the specified tension is essential to ensure the cardigan fits as designed.
