Product Description

This rectangular shawl is made with a Whirl and a Whirlette. You can also use any fingering weight yarn. The size is very easy to adapt. Simply add stripes to make it wider, or add/subtract multiples of 12 stitches to adjust the length. The ends left by the color changes are used for the fringes, so you only have 1 little yarn end to sew in. This pattern includes written instructions as well as a chart.

Electric Sky Crochet Shawl by Blue Lily

Project Overview

Electric Sky is a beginner-friendly crochet shawl design created by independent designer Blue Lily. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished shawl measuring 172 x 52cm after blocking, making it an ideal accessory for layering or draping. The design showcases beautiful color gradation through the use of variegated yarn, creating a dynamic visual effect that inspired its electric sky name.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a rectangular shawl with dimensions of 172 x 52cm. The shawl is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners, allowing crafters to build confidence while creating a wearable finished piece. The elongated rectangular shape makes it versatile for wearing as a wrap, shawlette, or decorative accessory.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

Electric Sky employs several core crochet techniques that make it accessible to beginner-level crocheters:

  • Double Crochet (dc): The primary stitch throughout the pattern, forming the main fabric structure
  • Single Crochet (sc): Used for shaping and finishing edges
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Employed for joining rounds and securing stitches
  • Chain Stitch (ch): Used for foundation and turning chains
  • Clusters (cl): Defined as dc3tog (three double crochets together), created by working three double crochets in the same stitch with yarn overs pulled through multiple loops simultaneously, resulting in a textured, dimensional element

The pattern uses US crochet terminology throughout. An important note for following the instructions: the starting chain-3 counts as a double crochet throughout the pattern, while a starting chain-1 does not count as a stitch. The pattern is available in both written instructions and chart format, with the written pattern serving as the reference guide for row-by-row construction.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Electric Sky is designed for 4 ply fingering weight yarn, specifically tested with Scheepjes Whirl. The pattern requires approximately 1000 meters (225 grams) of yarn. Scheepjes Whirl is a blend of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, offering a balance of breathability and durability. The colorways pictured in the original pattern are Chewy Whirlette and Popin Candy Whirl, both variegated options that create the electric sky effect through color transitions.

Any similar fingering weight or 4 ply yarn can be substituted, provided it matches the yardage and weight requirements. The cotton-acrylic blend makes this shawl suitable for warm-weather wear while maintaining shape and elasticity.

Tools and Gauge

The pattern calls for a 3.5mm crochet hook. Achieving the correct tension is important for proper finished dimensions: the pattern specifies a gauge of 22 double crochets by 13 rows over 10 centimeters. Crocheters should work a gauge swatch before beginning to ensure their tension matches the pattern specifications, which will result in the shawl reaching its intended 172 x 52cm dimensions after blocking.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for crocheters new to shawl construction or those building fundamental skills. The use of basic stitches—primarily double crochet with cluster accents—keeps the pattern straightforward while still producing a sophisticated, finished garment. Beginners will benefit from the clear stitch definitions and the availability of both written and charted instructions.
