What is Being Made

The Einar Hat is a knitted adult-sized beanie featuring a repeating geometric motif inspired by traditional Shetland design. Named after the Old Norse word meaning "one, alone, and warrior," this hat showcases a single design element that repeats throughout the entire crown. The finished hat measures 20cm (8 inches) in height with a circumference of 55cm (21.5 inches), fitting an average adult head size. Originally published in the 2018 Shetland Wool Week Annual, this design draws inspiration from an Up Helly Aa shield motif from 2006, making it a culturally significant piece rooted in Shetland textile traditions.

Techniques Used

This knitting project employs circular knitting techniques, allowing for seamless construction in the round. The design utilizes stranded colorwork, a traditional Fair Isle technique where multiple yarn colors are carried across the back of the work to create the repeating shield-inspired motif. • Needles: 2.5mm circular needle measuring 40cm in length, or double-pointed needles (DPNs) of the same size for working in the round.
