Product Description

The Echoing Green Shawl is a top-down, half-circle shawl knit in two colors of Oakworth 4ply. The stockinette body is knit in Hosta and the lace border is knit in Larch. The shawl has optional decorative fringes along the central spine and the top of the lace border.

The shawl is the first of the four-shawl collection Four Seasons. It draws its name and inspiration from the beautiful, short poem by William Blake. The poem begins with a short description of children playing on a green, grassy field on a warm, spring day, and ends with the older men reminiscing about their youth, embracing the change from youth to old age. The poem contrasts youth and old age, with Spring representing life in general. This Spring shawl is a celebration of this deep philosophy of life, reflecting childhood and youth in the light green shade, and old age or the end of life in the darker green shade with the falling leaves lace.

All the designs are knit in collaboration with Eden Cottage Yarns.

Project Overview

The Echoing Green Shawl is a top-down, half-circle shawl designed as the first installment in the Four Seasons collection. Drawing inspiration from William Blake's poem of the same name, this intermediate-level knitting project combines stockinette and lace techniques in a two-color colorwork design.

Construction Method

This shawl is constructed using a top-down approach, beginning at the neck and expanding outward to create the characteristic half-circle silhouette. The two-part construction divides the design into distinct sections: a solid stockinette body and a decorative lace border, each worked in contrasting yarn colors.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

  • Stockinette stitch forms the main body of the shawl, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Lace stitch patterns comprise the decorative border, adding openwork detail and visual interest to the finished piece
  • Two-color knitting integrates Hosta and Larch yarns throughout the design
  • Optional decorative fringes can be added along the central spine and the top edge of the lace border for enhanced embellishment

Yarn and Materials

The Echoing Green Shawl is knit in Oakworth 4ply yarn, a lightweight fingering-weight option suitable for creating detailed stitch definition. The stockinette body is worked in the Hosta colorway, while the lace border features the contrasting Larch colorway. The project accommodates both 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, offering flexibility for yarn substitution while maintaining appropriate fabric drape and stitch clarity.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in stockinette stitch, lace knitting, and shaping techniques. Experience with top-down construction and two-color knitting is beneficial for successful completion.

Design Inspiration

The shawl draws its aesthetic and nomenclature from William Blake's poem The Echoing Green, a work celebrating the joy and vitality of spring and childhood play. This literary connection informs the shawl's design philosophy within the broader Four Seasons collection.
