Product Description
This quick hat was inspired by a sea urchin shell in the Paris Museum of Natural History. Sea urchins are members of the order Echinoida, which are characterised, in part, by exhibiting five-fold symmetry. Under their spiny exteriors, sea urchin shells have a rough pebbly texture that reminds me of seed stitch, which makes up the body of this hat. Five equally spaced columns of ribbing mimic the symmetry of the adult urchin and provide the perfect vertical line for hiding the crown decreases. Pattern is charted. Sample shown was worked in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes in Pampas Heather.
Skills needed: Knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, and tubular cast on. Gauge: 20 sts/24 rounds over 4 in/10 cm in seed stitch on larger needles.
Echinoid Hat by Rachel C. Brown
What is Being Made
The Echinoid is a knitted hat designed by Rachel C. Brown, inspired by the natural geometry of sea urchin shells found in the Paris Museum of Natural History. This quick knit project creates a fitted hat available in four sizes: Small (fitting head circumferences up to 18 inches/45.5 cm), Medium (20 inches/51 cm), Large (22 inches/56 cm), and Extra Large (24 inches/61 cm). The actual finished hat circumference measures approximately 16 [18, 20, 22] inches or 40.5 [45.5, 51, 56] centimeters.
Design Inspiration and Construction
The hat draws its aesthetic from the five-fold symmetry characteristic of sea urchins belonging to the order Echinoida. This natural mathematical pattern is translated into the knitted structure through five equally spaced columns of ribbing that run vertically around the hat. These ribbed columns serve a dual purpose: they visually mimic the symmetrical structure of an adult sea urchin while also providing perfectly positioned vertical lines that elegantly conceal the crown decreases during the hat's shaping.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Echinoid hat employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. The body of the hat is constructed primarily using seed stitch, which creates a rough, pebbly texture reminiscent of the actual surface of a sea urchin shell. This textured stitch is complemented by ribbing in the five vertical columns that provide structure and visual interest.
Specific knitting skills required include:
- Tubular cast on – used to create the foundation of the hat with a seamless, professional finish
- Knit and purl stitches – the fundamental building blocks of the seed stitch texture and ribbed columns
- Yarn over increases (yo) – used for shaping and creating openwork details where needed
- Decreases – essential for shaping the crown of the hat
- Centered double decrease (cdd) – a specific decrease technique achieved by slipping 2 stitches together as if to knit, knitting 1 stitch, then passing the 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a standard right-leaning decrease used throughout the pattern
Yarn and Materials
The Echinoid hat is designed to be worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for both the seed stitch texture and the ribbed columns. The pattern requires standard knitting needles appropriate for aran weight yarn, though specific needle size and yardage requirements are detailed in the complete pattern.
Difficulty Level
This project is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and shaping. The combination of seed stitch texture, ribbed columns, and crown decreases provides a satisfying challenge without requiring advanced techniques.
