Product Description

At low tide - or “Ebbe” in German, when the water recedes from the beach, a smooth surface of the water is created. Often the sea calms down at low tide.

“Ebbe” is simple and calm design. The diagonal lines reflect the outgoing water.

The bandana cowl is knitted from the bottom up. Starting at the tip, you knit brioche in rows. Later you cast on additional stitches to work in the round.

I use two contrasting colours to best show the effect of the brioche.

Ebbe Cowl by Sabrina Schumacher

What Is Being Made

Ebbe is a bandana-style cowl designed by independent designer Sabrina Schumacher. The name references the German word "Ebbe," meaning low tide, when water recedes from the beach and creates a calm, smooth surface. This design captures that serene aesthetic through simple, elegant construction and visual texture. The cowl is a versatile neckwear piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Design Inspiration and Construction Method

The Ebbe cowl features diagonal lines that visually reflect the movement of outgoing water, creating a dynamic yet calming design. The garment is knitted from the bottom up, beginning at the tip. This bottom-up construction method allows knitters to easily adjust the final length before binding off, providing flexibility in the finished dimensions.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This beginner-friendly cowl primarily features brioche stitch, a textured knitting technique that creates a plush, reversible fabric with distinctive vertical columns. The brioche stitch is worked in rows from the starting tip, then additional stitches are cast on to transition the piece into working in the round. The designer recommends using two contrasting yarn colors to best showcase the brioche stitch effect, as the interplay between light and dark yarns emphasizes the dimensional quality of the brioche texture.

The pattern includes instruction for the cabled cast-on method, which creates a sturdy, decorative edge ideal for cowls and other neckwear where a refined finish is desired.

Yarn and Materials

Ebbe is designed for DK weight yarn, a lightweight to medium yarn that produces fabric with excellent drape and breathability. The sample uses Penny Lane Yarns DK Lane, a premium yarn composed of 100% Merino superwash wool that is mulesing-free. This yarn offers 225 meters (246 yards) per 100 grams.

  • Light Color (LC): 1 skein in Upside Down; sample used 53 grams / 119 meters / 130 yards
  • Dark Color (DC): 1 skein in Melanzane; sample used 64 grams / 144 meters / 157 yards

The two-color yarn combination totals approximately 117 grams / 263 meters / 287 yards for the completed sample cowl.

Needles and Notions

Construction requires a 4.0 mm (US #6) circular needle measuring 80 centimeters (32 inches) in length, or double-pointed needles (DPNs) of the same size. Circular needles of this length accommodate the transition from flat brioche rows to working in the round. Knitters should select needle size to match the specified gauge.

Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and 4 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and round divisions during the in-the-round sections.

Gauge and Difficulty Level

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches by 46 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in brioche stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions and fabric characteristics. Ebbe is classified as a beginner-level knitting project, making it accessible to knitters new to brioche stitch techniques while offering an introduction to this popular textured stitch.
