Easy Peasy Mittens Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
Easy Peasy Mittens is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Hilde Ropstad of Smaatterier that creates classic fitted mittens. The pattern includes sizes for the entire family: Child Small, Child Medium, Child Large, Woman, and Man. Each size is tailored to specific hand measurements, ranging from approximately 3.25 inches hand length for Child Small to 7.5 inches for Man size. The mittens feature a traditional construction where the hand is knitted first, followed by the thumb, making them practical and straightforward to complete.
Techniques Used
The Easy Peasy Mittens pattern offers flexibility in construction method, allowing knitters to choose their preferred approach. Knitters can work these mittens using the magic loop technique from the top down, or alternatively use double pointed needles (dpns) working from the bottom up. Both methods result in the same finished mitten construction. The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting increases and decreases to shape the hand and create proper mitten fit across all five size options. This intermediate-level pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with these shaping techniques and can work in the round.
Stitches Used
The Easy Peasy Mittens pattern utilizes essential knitting stitches and abbreviations including cast on (CO) to begin the mittens, knit fro (Kfb) for increasing stitches, decrease (Dec) for shaping, and bind off (BO) to finish the edges. These fundamental stitches combine to create a straightforward mitten structure that is accessible to intermediate knitters while producing well-fitted results.
Materials and Gauge
The Easy Peasy Mittens pattern is designed to work with worsted weight yarn, a standard medium yarn weight that knits at a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches). Knitters will need either double pointed needles (dpns) or circular needles suitable for magic loop knitting, depending on their chosen construction method. Maintaining the specified gauge is essential for achieving the correct hand circumference measurements across all five sizes, ensuring mittens fit properly from child to adult.
