Product Description
I have been wanting to design a slouchy hat for some time that used only one skein of bulky-weight yarn, but wasn’t too bulky of a hat style to be my go-to hat. I came up with this wonderfully rhythmic series of stacked arches, with a simple but concise close for the crown. It’s a quick, soothing knit that will be a wardrobe staple for years to come!

Eastwin Slouchy Hat by Heather Mitchell
What Is Being Made
Eastwin is a slouchy hat designed by independent knitter Heather Mitchell as a quick, satisfying knit project. This hat is engineered to use only one skein of bulky-weight yarn while maintaining a wearable, everyday style that avoids an overly bulky appearance. The design features a distinctive stacked arch motif that creates visual interest and rhythm throughout the crown, making it an ideal wardrobe staple suitable for years of wear.
Knitting Techniques Used
The hat is constructed using in-the-round knitting, worked from the brim upward to the crown. This seamless construction method is achieved using either circular needles, double-pointed needles (DPNs), or the magic loop method, depending on knitter preference. The pattern incorporates yarn overs as a decorative element, worked carefully to create intentional openwork rather than accidental holes. Additionally, purling through the back loop is employed as a shaping technique to achieve the desired fit and drape of the slouchy silhouette.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary visual feature of Eastwin is its stacked arches stitch pattern, which creates a rhythmic, meditative knitting experience. The crown features a simple but concise close that neatly finishes the top of the hat. The combination of these stitch elements produces a balanced design that is neither overly complex nor monotonous, making it suitable for intermediate-level knitters seeking a satisfying project.
Materials and Tools Required
- Yarn: One skein of bulky-weight yarn (yardage determined by pattern specifications)
- Needles: US 8 (5.0 mm) circular needle or DPNs, 16" length, for the ribbed brim; US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needle or DPNs, 16" length or longer for magic loop method, for the main body
- Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle for weaving in ends, cable needle (optional)
Sizing and Gauge
Eastwin is available in two adult sizes: Medium to fit a head circumference of 22" (56 cm) and Large to fit 24" (61 cm). The pattern is worked at a gauge of 17 stitches and 22 rounds using US 9 (5.5 mm) needles. The brim is cast on with either 85 stitches (Medium) or 95 stitches (Large) using the smaller US 8 needles before transitioning to the larger US 9 needles for the body.
Difficulty Level
Eastwin is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. The rhythmic stitch pattern and straightforward construction provide a soothing, meditative knitting experience while introducing techniques such as yarn overs and back-loop purling in a manageable context.
