Product Description
Dyed In The Wool was designed as the pattern for a Dye A Long being held on the Criminal Knits (link text) Group starting April 10th (but feel free to join in any time the links are all there!) This is the perfect pattern for your first attempt at self dyeing as it will cover a multitude of sins! It's also just a neat little fast knit that will look terrific in just about any yarn. Perfect for the beginner or as a "knit nite" project, you can get a start on those Christmas presents right now!
The pattern is easily adjustable in the mid section so yardage can vary to a greater extent than normal!
Weight of yarn is also optional. We're using fingering weight yarn in the Dye A Long but you could use any weight - just remember to adjust your needle size and yardage!
Dyed In The Wool Knit Scarf Pattern
Project Overview
Dyed In The Wool is a downloadable knitting pattern for scarves designed by Threebagsfulled (© 2013 Hilary Designs). This intermediate-level knitting project is ideal for knitters looking to expand their technical skills while creating a finished wearable accessory. The pattern is available as a free PDF download and offers flexibility in final dimensions based on available yarn yardage.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a knit scarf suitable for everyday wear. The design allows crafters to customize the length and width of their finished scarf by adjusting the pattern parameters outlined in Section H of the instructions, making it adaptable to different yarn quantities and personal preferences.
Techniques Used
The Cable Cast On technique is a foundational method taught in this pattern. To execute this technique, knitters begin with a slip knot on the left-hand needle, then systematically insert the working needle between existing stitches, wrap yarn as if to knit, and pull the resulting loop back onto the left-hand needle. This creates a sturdy, elastic cast-on edge ideal for scarves and other projects requiring durability and stretch.
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
- K – Knit stitch, the fundamental forward stitch in knitting
- K2tog – Knit two stitches together, a basic decrease that reduces stitch count
- yo – Yarn over, a technique that creates decorative holes and increases stitch count
- c/o – Cast on, the process of creating initial stitches on the needle
- b/o – Bind off, the finishing technique that secures the final row
Materials Required
The pattern calls for 440 yards of fingering weight yarn, though this yardage can be adjusted upward or downward depending on desired scarf dimensions. Knitters will need Size 5 needles, which can be either straight needles or short circular needles. Since the scarf is worked back and forth rather than in the round, either needle style produces identical results—the choice depends on individual knitter comfort and preference.
Yarn Weight and Needle Specifications
Fingering weight yarn, also known as 4-ply yarn, is a lightweight to medium-weight yarn ideal for creating garments with drape and delicate stitch definition. This yarn weight pairs perfectly with Size 5 needles to produce fabric with excellent stitch clarity, allowing decorative techniques like yarn overs and cable cast-ons to display their full visual impact.
