What is Being Made

The Dust Rose Cowl is a circular cowl neck accessory designed by ViTalina Craft. This knitting pattern produces a finished cowl measuring 48 inches (122 cm) in circumference with an 11⅞ inch (30 cm) width after blocking. The cowl is worked in the round using a luxurious yarn blend, making it an elegant layering piece suitable for various occasions.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs several key techniques to create its finished design. The cowl is knitted in rounds, which creates a seamless tubular construction ideal for neck wear. The pattern incorporates cable stitches as a design element, adding textural interest and visual appeal to the piece. The pattern also utilizes yarn overs and decreases to create openwork or shaping details. Knitters are instructed to work with two strands of yarn held together, which adds depth and creates a more substantial fabric suitable for a cowl's drape and warmth.

Stitches Used

The Dust Rose Cowl pattern incorporates a variety of fundamental and decorative stitches:

  • K1 – knit one stitch
  • P1 – purl one stitch
  • K2tog – knit two stitches together (a right-leaning decrease)
  • SSK – slip 2 stitches one at a time knitwise to the right needle, insert left needle into the front of these stitches and knit them together (a left-leaning decrease)
  • YO – yarn over (creates an eyelet or lace hole)
  • C4F – slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold to front, knit 2 stitches, then knit 2 stitches from cable needle (a four-stitch cable crossing to the front)
  • C2F – slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold to front (a two-stitch cable variation)
  • Stockinette stitch – the foundational stitch used to establish gauge, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows (or knitting all rounds when working circularly)

Materials

The Dust Rose Cowl pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the designer's intended results. Yarn: 2 x 100 g of DROPS Lace yarn or an equivalent yarn that matches the required gauge. The recommended yarn for this project is DROPS Lace in shade 3112 powder pink, which is described as a wonderful blend of Baby Alpaca and Mulberry Silk. This luxurious fiber combination provides softness, drape, and a subtle sheen characteristic of lace-weight yarns. Needles and Notions: A circular needle in size 2.5 (3.0 mm) x 100 cm length for working the cowl in rounds, a cable needle in size 2.5 (3.0 mm) for executing the cable stitches, and a stitch marker to denote the beginning of each round. Gauge: The pattern specifies 26 stitches and 40 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using needle size 2.5 (3.0 mm). Obtaining accurate gauge is essential before beginning the project to ensure the finished cowl meets the specified measurements.

Pattern Summary

This intermediate-level cowl pattern from ViTalina Craft combines classic knitting techniques with elegant design details. The use of lace-weight yarn in a Baby Alpaca and Mulberry Silk blend creates a sophisticated, lightweight cowl suitable for layering. The combination of stockinette stitch as a base with cable crossings and yarn-over details adds visual interest while maintaining wearability. By working with two strands of yarn held together, knitters create a more substantial fabric that drapes beautifully around the neck. The circular construction ensures a seamless, professional finish, making this an ideal project for knitters with intermediate skills seeking to expand their cable and circular knitting techniques.
