Product Description

I love fingerless gloves for chilly days when you need to be able to use your fingers, but want to keep your hands warm. The long cuff on these gloves ensures that your wrists will stay warm and covered even if your shirt sleeves ride up. I love that this cable is simple, but not boring. The braid is intentionally off-set.

These gloves are made to match my Dunloe hat pattern.

This pattern calls for a fingering weight yarn, 200 yards is a generous estimate. Needles are needed in 2.25mm and 2.5mm sizes. DPN or long circulars for magic loop are each fine depending on your preference.

Dunloe Fingerless Gloves by Knit Knight Designs

What Is Being Made

The Dunloe Fingerless Gloves are an elegantly understated knitted accessory designed by Amanda Hall of Knit Knight Designs. These fingerless gloves feature a long cuff construction specifically engineered to keep wrists warm and covered, even when shirt or jacket sleeves ride up. The design includes a thumb gusset for comfortable hand coverage while leaving fingers exposed for dexterity and tactile sensitivity. This pattern was intentionally created to coordinate with the Dunloe hat, making it an excellent choice for matching accessory sets.

Techniques Used

The Dunloe Fingerless Gloves employ several intermediate-level knitting techniques to achieve their refined appearance. The pattern utilizes an intentionally off-set cable design that serves as a focal point, providing visual interest while maintaining the gloves' understated elegance. Knitters will work with a thumb gusset construction, which requires increasing and decreasing stitches to create a comfortable, fitted opening for the thumb. The long cuff design demands careful attention to stitch consistency and gauge to ensure proper fit around the wrist and forearm area.

Stitches Used

This intermediate knitting project incorporates fundamental stitches combined with cable work. The pattern employs the following abbreviations and techniques:

  • K (Knit): The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric
  • P (Purl): Purl stitches are used to create texture and contrast
  • K2tog (Knit Two Together): This decrease stitch shapes the glove and creates fitted sections
  • K1fb (Knit in Front and Back): This increase stitch expands the fabric where needed, particularly in the thumb gusset area
  • Cable stitches: The off-set cable design requires the use of a cable needle to create the characteristic twisted, dimensional pattern

Materials Required

Creating the Dunloe Fingerless Gloves requires specific materials chosen for their suitability to small-diameter knitting and the delicate nature of fingerless glove construction:

  • Fingering Weight Yarn: Approximately 200 yards of fingering weight yarn provides the appropriate thickness and drape for this project
  • Needles: Size US 1 (2.25mm) and Size US 1.5 (2.5mm) needles are specified for small diameter knitting; knitters should adjust needle sizes as necessary to achieve proper gauge
  • Stitch Markers: Two stitch markers help track pattern repeats and important sections throughout the knitting process
  • Cable Needle: One cable needle is essential for executing the off-set cable design that defines these gloves
  • Scrap Yarn: Scrap yarn serves as a temporary holder for thumb gusset stitches during construction

Gauge and Finishing Notes

Achieving proper gauge is critical for this intermediate project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 stitches and 6 rows per 1 inch square. Knitters should knit a gauge swatch using their chosen yarn and needles before beginning the project, adjusting needle sizes up or down as needed to match this specification. Proper gauge ensures that the fingerless gloves will fit correctly around the hand and wrist.

The Dunloe Fingerless Gloves pattern permits knitters to sell finished products made from this design. Designers and sellers are encouraged to credit Amanda Hall and Knit Knight Designs and reference the pattern name, though this is not required. The pattern itself remains the intellectual property of the designer and should not be reproduced or claimed without permission.
