Dunia Shawl by Maria Socha
What is Being Made
Dunia is a fingering weight shawl pattern designed by Maria Socha of sochaknits. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a generous triangular shawl with finished measurements of approximately 160cm (63 inches) in wingspan and 70cm (27½ inches) in center depth, making it a substantial accessory suitable for layering or wrapping.
Yarn Requirements and Materials
The Dunia shawl is worked in fingering weight yarn using two colors:
- Main Color (MC): Approximately 420 meters / 460 yards
- Contrasting Color (CC): Approximately 210 meters / 230 yards
The sample shown was created using merino super wash yarn at 420m per 100g, hand dyed by the designer. The pattern recommends 4.0mm (US #6) circular needles, along with stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 21 stitches by 48 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in Garter Stitch, measured after blocking. While gauge is not considered crucial for this particular project, variations in gauge will affect both the final yardage requirements and the finished dimensions of the completed shawl.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Dunia employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for an intermediate-level crafter. The primary stitch used throughout the pattern is Garter Stitch, which is created by knitting every row. This classic stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges.
Additional techniques incorporated in the pattern include:
- Knit (k): The basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (p): The reverse of the knit stitch, used in combination with knits to create stitch patterns
- Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to shape the shawl
- Knit front and back (kfb): An increase technique that creates additional stitches for shaping
- Bind off (BO): The finishing technique used to secure stitches and complete the shawl edges
- Stitch markers: Used to mark pattern repeats and important sections throughout the knitting process
