Dumka Hat by Sochaknits
What Is Being Made
Dumka is a knitted hat designed by Maria Socha of Sochaknits. This is a one-size hat pattern that fits head circumferences of 56–58 cm (22–23 inches). The finished hat measures 23 cm (9 inches) from the cast-on edge to the point, creating a classic pointed silhouette. This downloadable PDF pattern is suitable for beginner knitters looking to create a stylish, wearable accessory.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Dumka hat employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The pattern uses a provisional cast-on, which allows stitches to be picked up later for finishing, requiring waste yarn and an extra needle. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles, a technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for hat construction. The pattern incorporates decreases to shape the crown of the hat as it tapers to its point. A crochet hook is included in the materials list, suggesting it may be used for finishing details or securing cast-on edges.
Stitches Used
The Dumka pattern utilizes core knitting stitches fundamental to hat construction:
- Stockinette Stitch – the primary stitch used throughout the hat, worked over 20 stitches by 26 rows per 10 cm (4 inches) with the larger needle
- Knit (k) – basic knit stitch
- Purl (p) – basic purl stitch
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease created by slipping 2 stitches knitwise and knitting them together through the back loops
- Slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slip stitch over (sk2p) – a double decrease for more dramatic shaping
- Yarn over (yo) – creates decorative eyelets or lace elements
Materials and Yarn
The Dumka hat requires 150 meters (165 yards) of worsted weight yarn. The sample shown in the pattern was created using Malabrigo Rios in the colorway Pocion. Worsted weight yarn is a medium-thickness yarn that works up quickly and provides excellent stitch definition, making it ideal for beginner knitters to see their stitches clearly.
Needles and Tools
This pattern calls for US #6 (4.00 mm) and US #7 (4.50 mm) circular needles. The gauge is established with the larger needle (US #7) at 20 stitches by 26 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in Stockinette Stitch. Additional tools required include double-pointed needles (dpn) for working the crown decreases when the stitch count becomes too small for circular needles, waste yarn for the provisional cast-on, a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round, and a crochet hook for finishing.
