Duck Hat Crochet Pattern Summary

What is Being Made

The Duck Hat, also known as the Duckling Hat, is a charming crocheted hat designed by Stacey Trock and available in both child and adult sizes. This playful headwear features duck-inspired construction with color blocking that creates the appearance of a duckling, complete with distinct color sections for the head, bill, and facial features.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental techniques to achieve its structured, three-dimensional form. The pattern utilizes back loop only stitching throughout most of the construction, which creates distinctive ridges on the right side of the finished piece—a key design element that adds visual texture and definition to the hat's silhouette. Working in the round is the primary construction method, allowing the crocheter to build the hat seamlessly from the crown downward.

The pattern incorporates color changes to distinguish different sections of the duck design, requiring careful yarn management and strategic placement of new colors. This technique-driven approach makes the Duck Hat an excellent intermediate project for crocheters looking to practice color work and structural shaping.

Stitches Used

The Duck Hat pattern relies on essential crochet stitches that form the foundation of the design:

  • Chain (ch) — used for foundation and stitch construction
  • Single Crochet (sc) — the primary stitch throughout the pattern, worked primarily into the back loop only
  • Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog) — used for decreasing stitches to shape the hat and create proper fit

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Duck Hat requires worsted weight yarn in multiple colors to create the duck design. Less than 220 yards total is needed, typically requiring just one skein of yarn divided among the color sections. The pattern specifies the following color palette:

  • MC (Main Color) — Yellow for the primary duck body (Ella Rae Classic color #44 used in the sample)
  • SC (Secondary Color) — Orange for the bill or accent areas (Plymouth Galway Worsted color #154 used in the sample)
  • AC1 (Accent Color 1) — White for eye or detail sections (Ella Rae Classic color #01 used in the sample)
  • AC2 (Accent Color 2) — Black for facial features like pupils (Ella Rae Classic color #32 used in the sample)

The designer recommends 100% wool worsted weight yarn for optimal results, with specific brands including Ella Rae Classic and Plymouth Galway Worsted. However, any worsted weight yarn in the specified colors will produce satisfactory results. A Size H crochet hook is required for this project, paired with a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in yarn ends.
