Product Description
She let out a big sigh, life seemed to be so full of changes, the family was getting both bigger and smaller at the same time. Pouring a fresh cup of tea into her cup, she marveled at how it was the small things that seemed to be constant and dependable – and she was ever thankful for those things.
Duchess Rose is a cuff down sock with three little rosettes that adorn the side, just below the cuff. The pattern is written to use contrast colors for the rosettes and the leaves to make the design stand out more, however, in a solid color yarn the design will still be represented if you choose not to use contrast colors. The design was inspired by a teacup decorated with many roses, and I focused on the three little roses along the side.
Pattern uses aprox. 45-75 grams (200 – 330 yds or 180 - 300 meters) of fingering weight yarn, plus 15 grams (65 yds or 60 meters) of CC1 and 10 grams (45 yds or 40 meters) of CC2 fingering weight yarn.
Duchess Rose Socks by Spivay Song Knits
What Is Being Made
Duchess Rose is a pair of cuff-down socks featuring decorative rosette motifs. The design includes three small rosettes positioned along the side of the sock, just below the cuff. The pattern is inspired by the delicate floral design of a decorative teacup and translates that aesthetic into wearable knitwear. These socks are available in five sizes: XS, S, M, L, and XL, designed to fit foot circumferences of approximately 7.5 inches and larger.
Techniques Used
The Duchess Rose socks are constructed using the cuff-down knitting method, which means knitting begins at the cuff and progresses downward toward the foot and toe. This top-down approach allows for easy adjustments and fitting as you work. The pattern incorporates colorwork techniques to create the rosette motifs, with the designer recommending the use of contrast colors to make the floral design stand out prominently against the base sock color. However, the pattern is also suitable for knitting in a single solid color yarn, where the rosette design will still be visible through stitch definition alone.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern (including k for knit), the pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with colorwork techniques to create the three-dimensional rosette flowers and accompanying leaf details. The rosettes and leaves can be emphasized through contrast yarn colors or worked in a monochromatic approach depending on the crafter's preference.
Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Tools
Duchess Rose is designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn weight, which is a lightweight fingering-weight yarn ideal for creating fitted, detailed socks with excellent stitch definition. The pattern calls for double-pointed knitting needles (DPNs), the traditional tool for sock knitting that allows for seamless construction in the round. The use of 4-ply yarn with DPNs creates socks with a refined drape and durability suitable for regular wear.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an accessible introduction to sock knitting for those new to the craft. The straightforward cuff-down construction combined with basic knitting stitches means that even novice knitters can successfully complete this project, while the colorwork elements add gentle complexity without overwhelming beginners.
