A chevron headband worked using a light DK weight yarn.
It is sized up to fit both girls and women and measures 3 ¼ (4, 4 ¾) in / 8 (10, 12) cm wide and 17 (19, 21) in / 43 (48, 53.5) cm long, excluding loop. To fit 18 (20, 22) in / 45.5 (51, 56) cm head circumference
The Dryad headband is a knitted headwear accessory designed by Katya Frankel. This intermediate-level project creates a fitted headband that tapers toward its outer ends, available in three sizes to fit head circumferences of 18, 20, or 22 inches (45.5, 51, or 56 centimeters). The finished headband measures between 3.25 and 4.75 inches wide and ranges from 17 to 21 inches long, excluding the decorative loop closure.
The Dryad headband is constructed using a chevron stitch pattern as its primary design element. The shaping is incorporated directly into the stitch pattern itself, allowing the sides of the headband to taper smoothly toward the outer ends without requiring complex shaping techniques. This approach creates visual interest while maintaining structural integrity.
The project requires intermediate knitting skills and involves several fundamental techniques:
The Dryad headband is knitted using HiKoo Simplicity yarn in the colorway #008 natural olive. This yarn blend contains 55% superwash merino, 28% acrylic, and 17% nylon, offering durability and easy care. One 50-gram skein provides 117 yards (107 meters) of yarn, which is sufficient to complete the project.
The recommended needles are size 3.25mm (US 3), though knitters should adjust needle size as needed to achieve the correct gauge of 24 stitches and 34 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stocking stitch. Additional notions include two double-pointed needles for I-cord construction, a removable stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats, a tapestry needle for finishing, and one 0.75-inch (2 centimeter) button for the closure mechanism.
