Product Description
These unisex socks are worked from the cuff/top down to the toe in the round. The cuffs are worked with a 1x2 ribbing. They feature a short-row heel and a simple textured cable pattern on the leg. This pattern is also worked on the top of the foot, with a plain stockinette sole.
This pattern is suitable for most fingering-weight yarns. You will need a single 425-yard (or more) skein of fingering-weight yarn to knit any of the three sizes.
Driftwood Socks by Anne Podlesak
What Is Being Made
Driftwood Socks are a pair of top-down knitted socks designed by Anne Podlesak. This downloadable knitting pattern produces finished socks in three sizes: Small (7½" foot circumference), Medium (8" foot circumference), and Large (9" foot circumference). The socks are suitable for everyday wear and feature a coordinated design across both the leg and foot.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques. The socks are constructed from the top down, meaning knitting begins at the cuff and progresses toward the toe. A short-row heel is used to shape the heel section, which is a popular technique that creates a fitted, comfortable heel without requiring a separate heel flap. The pattern is designed to be worked in the round, using circular needles or double-pointed needles depending on your preferred method for knitting small circumferences.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Driftwood Socks feature a simple textured stitch pattern that appears on both the leg and foot sections. The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including knit (K) and purl (P) stitches to create the texture. Decreasing techniques such as knit 2 together (K2tog) and slip, slip, knit (SSK) are incorporated into the pattern, particularly for shaping the heel and foot. Stitch markers are used throughout to help track pattern repeats and the beginning of rounds.
Yarn and Materials
The sample shown in the pattern was knit using Wooly Wonka Fibers Rhiannon Sock yarn in the Driftwood colorway. This yarn is a 4-ply weight sock yarn with 465 yards per 100-gram skein. One skein is sufficient to complete the socks in all available sizes. The recommended gauge is 32 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when measured over the chart pattern after blocking.
For needles, the pattern calls for US size 1 (2.25 mm) needles suitable for your preferred method of knitting small circumferences in the round. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to achieve the correct gauge. Additional notions required include stitch markers, a cable needle, and a darning needle for weaving in ends.
