Product Description

This adorable fox has been a hit with everyone who sees him and is a lot of fun to knit.

Two sets of instructions are provided: work the body and head in the round and sew on the white patches at the end if you prefer a simpler knit, or, choose intarsia in the round for a more challenging knit that reduces finishing.

This pattern would suit intermediate knitters and is a perfect opportunity to learn some new skills. Techniques used include the (optional) intarsia in the round (fully explained in the pattern), short rows, joining parts by knitting, knitted rag doll joints and the Turkish cast on. Links to useful tutorials are provided for each technique.

The sample is shown in Dream in Color Perfectly Posh Single Ply (fingering weight, 360 yards/100 grams per ball). The sample was constructed using intarsia in the round and knitting ears, legs and tail on. Yardage for the sample is: 150 yards orange, 40 yards white, 60 yards black.

Dreamy Fox Knitted Toy Pattern by Browneyedbabs

What Is Being Made

The Dreamy Fox is an intermediate-level knitted stuffed toy designed by Browneyedbabs. This charming amigurumi-style fox measures approximately 10 inches (25 centimeters) tall when sitting, making it an ideal handmade gift or decorative piece. The pattern produces a three-dimensional plush toy with distinct color blocking in orange, black, and white to create the fox's characteristic features and markings.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern offers flexibility in construction methods, with two distinct approaches provided:

  • Intarsia in the round: An advanced color-work technique that allows knitters to incorporate multiple yarn colors within circular knitting without carrying yarn across the back. The pattern includes a dedicated tutorial covering pages 7 to 10 to guide knitters through this method. Intarsia in the round creates clean, professional-looking color transitions ideal for toy design.
  • Non-intarsia method: An alternative approach for knitters preferring simpler color changes or those less experienced with intarsia techniques.
  • Modular construction: The fox's ears, legs, and tail are knitted separately and then attached to the main body, allowing for easier construction and better shaping of individual components.

Stitches and Construction Details

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches worked primarily in stockinette stitch, the most common knit fabric. Construction involves circular knitting using stitch markers to denote pattern sections and increases/decreases to shape the three-dimensional form. The pattern includes abbreviations and stitch holder instructions for managing stitches during modular assembly. Knitters will work increases and decreases to create the fox's rounded head and body, then attach separately constructed limbs and tail.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Dreamy Fox pattern requires fingering weight yarn totaling approximately 250 yards across three colors:

  • 150 yards of orange fingering weight yarn for the primary body color
  • 60 yards of black fingering weight yarn for facial features and markings
  • 40 yards of white fingering weight yarn for accent details

The sample shown was created using Dream in Color Perfectly Posh Single Ply, a luxury blend containing 70% wool, 10% mohair, 10% silk, and 10% cashmere with yardage of 360 yards per 100 grams. Specific colorways used were Gold Experience (orange), Black Pearl (black), and Crying Dove (white). Knitters may substitute any fingering weight yarn in these colors for comparable results.

Tools and Notions

This project requires the following equipment and supplies:

  • US 3 / 3.25mm circular needle for working the toy in the round
  • Six stitch markers to track pattern sections and shaping
  • Stitch holders or waste yarn for holding stitches during construction
  • Polyester fiberfill or toy stuffing for filling the completed toy
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembling components
  • Optional 16mm safety eyes (as used in the sample) or black thread for embroidering eyes if safety eyes are not preferred

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 25 stitches and 36 rows measured over a 4-inch square in stockinette stitch when worked flat. Maintaining this gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished size of 10 inches in height. Knitters who work at different gauges may produce a fox of larger or smaller dimensions.

Pattern Format and Difficulty

This is an intermediate-level knitting pattern available as a downloadable PDF. The pattern provides clear printing instructions: pages 1 through 4 and page 6 are required for the non-intarsia version, while the complete intarsia method requires all six pages plus the instructional tutorial. The intermediate difficulty rating reflects the color-work techniques, circular knitting construction, and modular assembly required to complete the project successfully.
