Product Description
With the designing process, I often have the design all worked out in my head, write up the initial pattern and then find a suitable yarn to match my vision.
This time, I saw this yarn with shades of pink, purple and orange and straight away, it reminded me of something. A sunset.
Sitting on the steps at the back of my house, I often sit and look at the sunsets. They are a frequent occurrence especially as the spring turns to summer. The colours are so vibrant!
This shawl has been designed for the yarn to be the main focus, to take centre stage and for its’ full effect to be shown.
I settled on this striped design so that the colours of the sunset could work their way across the shawl. I set the raised coloured stripes against a plain pink background which represents the pink haze that surrounds a sunset.
I used 691m of Colour A and 550m of Colour B. The sample was knit in Nako Angora Luks and Nako Angora Luks Color. My testers used Scheepjes Whirl and Whirlette or their pattern tests.
Dreaming of a Sunset Shawl
What Is Being Made
The Dreaming of a Sunset Shawl is a knitted shawl designed by Hannah Visan that celebrates the vibrant colors of sunset through carefully selected yarn. This design showcases a striped pattern that allows the yarn's multi-colored palette of pink, purple, and orange to become the focal point of the finished piece. The shawl features raised colored stripes set against a plain pink background, which represents the soft pink haze that surrounds a sunset. This project is ideal for knitters seeking a beginner-friendly shawl pattern that emphasizes yarn color and visual impact.
Design Inspiration and Concept
Hannah Visan drew inspiration for this shawl from observing sunsets from the back steps of her home, particularly during the transition from spring to summer. The designer selected a yarn featuring shades of pink, purple, and orange specifically because it evoked the vibrant colors of these natural sunsets. Rather than creating a complex stitch pattern, Visan chose a striped design approach that allows the yarn's inherent color variations to take center stage and showcase their full visual effect across the finished shawl.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This shawl employs a striped knitting technique as its primary design element. The pattern uses raised colored stripes that contrast against a plain pink background, creating visual interest through color blocking rather than intricate stitch work. This approach makes the pattern accessible for beginner knitters while still producing a striking finished garment. The striped design allows the yarn colors to work their way across the shawl in a deliberate, organized manner.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Dreaming of a Sunset Shawl is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a lightweight fabric suitable for a shawl. The pattern is engineered to work with variegated or multi-colored yarn featuring pink, purple, and orange tones, though the specific yarn brand and yardage requirements are detailed within the downloadable PDF pattern. Knitters will need appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn to achieve the correct gauge and fabric drape.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to shawl construction or those looking for a straightforward project that emphasizes yarn beauty over complex techniques. The striped design and beginner-friendly approach allow newer knitters to create an impressive finished piece without requiring advanced stitch knowledge.
Pattern Format
The Dreaming of a Sunset Shawl is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing immediate access to complete instructions and any accompanying charts or diagrams needed to complete the project.
